Pete Rock Wanted To Assist Lupe Fiasco On 'T.R.O.Y.' Remake
'I want to give you that same impact that I had when I put that record out,' Pete Rock says about 'Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free).'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway
Pete Rock and CL Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" is an iconic, classic and unforgettable track that hip-hop fans across the world hold near and dear. But as special as the 1992 track is to the listener, it means even more to the creator, who originally made the track in dedication to his fallen friend Troy "Trouble T Roy" Dixon. So when producer Pete Rock first heard Lupe Fiasco's remake, "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)," on the radio last week, he was quite upset.
"At that point, my emotions were working — I'm still thinking about Heavy D and Troy is a dear friend to me, and my emotions got the best of me, and I expressed myself on Twitter," Pete Rock told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway on Tuesday, a week after Lupe released his single.
Dixon, a former member of the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, passed away in 1990 after an accidental fall while he was out on tour. Two years later, Pete Rock and his partner CL Smooth released "T.R.O.Y." to pay homage. The song took on even greater meaning for Rock after Heavy D, his cousin, passed away in November 2011.
The Soul Brother said he was approached by Lupe's label and management to use his classic beat for their new track. Rock agreed, under the one condition: that he was involved in the recording process. "I thought from that point I would be involved with Lupe and being in the studio, tweaking the beat, but I never heard from the record label, and then I turn on the radio, and hear it on the radio," Rock explained.
Instead of involving Pete Rock, Lupe and his team re-created the beat from the original 1967 Tom Scott sample from which "T.R.O.Y." was crafted.
"No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it's like that it should not be touched by no one," Rock tweeted after hearing the track. "I'm not flattered @ all. Dat sh-- is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f---in self. Smh."
The two soon got on the phone, and their respective differences were thought to be solved. "I just got off da phone with lupe, we worked out our difference and we bout to get it in," Pete tweeted May 23. "Gonna be epic and we gonna give Troy and hev the proper respect they deserve and make history."
The very next day, an irate Lupe phoned into the "Sway in the Morning" radio show and blasted Pete Rock for what he said was a premature tweet. "He wasn't supposed to say that," Lupe said in response to Pete's tweet about plans to collaborate, which has now been deleted from his account. "He was supposed to say the same sh-- he said on the phone: 'Yo, man, it was my bad, that was wack, it was f---ed up for me to say that, it was disrespectful, I was 100 percent in the wrong, I apologize.' That's what he was supposed to say."
The two artists clearly have different views, but Pete contends that his aim was to make peace. "When he called, he was upset, and I just tried to talk him through that and say, 'Look, man, at the end of the day, let's just fix this thing,' " Rock explained to MTV News. "My whole goal was to just squash this thing, fix the music and just move on."
Pete said he's still a Fiasco fan — naming "Paris, Tokyo" and "Kick, Push" as two of his favorite songs — but he also stands by his original condition: If anyone is to remake "T.R.O.Y.," he wants to be involved. "If you're using my track, I want to give you that same impact that I had when I put that record out," he said.
"They Reminisce Over You" has already been redone several times — on mixtapes as well as commercially released albums. Rock said he can't control the unauthorized mixtape versions, but he would like to be a part of all official remakes, as he was on Mary J. Blige's 1993 What's the 411? Remix album. "The Mary J. Blige remix was dope because she involved us and she put CL Smooth on her remix," he said.
What do you think about Lupe Fiasco's "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)"? Sound off below!

Blocks Where No One Has Fun
A few thoughts on how and where to do or not do an Entertainment District, from Salon.com, Saturday, May 19, 2012.
Urban entertainment districts: Blocks where no one has fun
Cities keep trying to create downtown cool with dull nightlife districts. But who wants to hang out at the mall?
By Will Doig
If you took all the clich?s about horrible urban design and shoved them into 75 acres, you?d probably end up with something pretty close to Dallas? Victory Park. A pre-planned billion-dollar collection of imposing hyper-modern monumental structures, high-end chain stores, enormous video screens, expensive restaurants, a sports arena and tons of parking, completely isolated from the rest of the city by a pair of freeways, Victory Park is like the schizophrenic dream of some power-hungry capitalist technocrat.
Or in this case, his son?s. The ? neighborhood? development? ? was built by Ross Perot Jr. as an ?urban lifestyle destination.? But what it really is is an entertainment district: that swath of cityscape whose character has been preordained by a city council vote and is now identified by brightly colored banners affixed to lampposts. (The entertainment district?s close cousin, the arts district, is often lurking somewhere nearby.)
What could be wrong with a district where nightclubs and galleries are encouraged to thrive? Nothing, necessarily; done right, a city can help foster these scenes with a gentle guiding hand. Constructing an entire milieu from whole cloth, however, is where cities get into trouble. ?The problem with these created-overnight districts is that you?re trying to create a culture as opposed to letting one grow,? says Nathaniel Hood, a Minneapolis-based transportation planner. ?You?re getting the culture that one developer or city council member thinks the city needs, as opposed to the ground-up culture that comes from multiple players.?
Victory Park is an extreme example, hyper-planned right down to the performances to be held at its American Airlines Center. (?A U2 concert is fabulous,? Perot told the Wall Street Journal. ?KISS, not so good.?) But the Dallas Arts District, though less micro-managed, has struggled with its identity as well. Conceived in the 1970s by design consultants in faraway Boston, it relocated the city?s arts institutions to the northeast corner of downtown. Another planning consultancy drew the boundaries of the district, and one by one, the city?s cultural icons were moved there. Today, it contains the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Winspear Opera House. It?s home to buildings by Renzo Piano, I.M. Pei, Rem Koolhaas and Norman Foster. In fact, you?ll find everything in the Dallas Arts District except a lot of people, says Patrick Kennedy, owner of the Space Between Design Studio and the blog Walkable DFW.
?A district inherently becomes a single-use idea,? says Kennedy. ?Everything has to be ?art.? You end up with a bunch of performing arts spaces and when they?re not in use it becomes a vacuum.? This vacuum has made the district itself a museum of sorts, something impressive to observe but strangely inert. (The Chicago Tribune called the area ?the dullest arts district money can buy.?) It has few apartment buildings; one is the new Museum Tower, a 42-story condo residence that, as of last month, had sold only 16 of its 102 units. The Museum Tower recently made news when its glass facade began reflecting 103-degree sunlight directly into the Nasher Sculpture Center next door. Now the tower?s developers and the Sculpture Center are embroiled in a fight over which party should alter its building ? essentially, arguing over whether art or residents should reign supreme in the Dallas Arts District.
That?s a defeatist choice to have to make, but the monocultures created by urban districting make it almost inevitable. At last week?s 20th annual Congress for the New Urbanism, Hood spoke about the folly that is Kansas City?s Power & Light District, an $850 million entertainment district whose neon signage is as blinding as its eagerness to be hip. But no one would mistake Power & Light for a neighborhood created by cool kids. ?Land costs are higher downtown, so you have to create something genuinely unique,? says Hood. ?It can?t just be an outdoor mall with slightly cooler bars.?
But that?s exactly what you get in the Power & Light District: themed venues catering to neatly delineated tastes, Epcot-style: the Maker?s Mark Bourbon House & Lounge (?Southern Hospitality rises to a new level?), the Dubliner (?true Irish ambiance?), Howl at the Moon (?a completely unique dueling piano entertainment concept?) and PBR Big Sky (?every cowboy and cowgirl?s nighttime oasis?). The model suggests that city life is nothing more than a selection of personal consumption experiences. But at times, the district feels more like a very enthusiastic ghost town ? one with a $12.8 million budget shortfall.
It?s not just that the developers are boring people ? the economics of single-owner districts incentivize blandness. Chain stores and restaurants can afford to pay higher rent, so they get first dibs. To boost rents even higher, tenants are sometimes promised that no competition will be allowed nearby. ?Starbucks will be willing to pay the higher rent if [the developer doesn't] let other cafes into the area,? says Hood. And forget about occupying the Power & Light District ? you?re on private property. For a full list of the rules (no bicycles, panhandling, profanity on clothing) you can consult its website.
?A true [arts or entertainment] district is always sort of moving around,? says Kennedy. ?It?s wherever the bohemians find cheap real estate.? For instance, compare Power & Light or Victory Park or even the Dallas Arts District with Boston?s Kenmore Square, which developed in the ?80s and ?90s as a wildly diverse barrage of punk venues, rock clubs, dive bars, sports bars and beloved hole-in-the-wall restaurants, all anchored by Fenway Park, bringing together an unlikely cross-section of Bostonians into one spontaneous not-an-entertainment-district for freaks, foodies and sports nuts alike. And despite being unplanned and unsubsidized (or, more accurately, because of that), Kenmore eventually upscaled in exactly the way city leaders hope for.
Kenmore Square, by the way, also disproves the conventional wisdom that the presence of a stadium or arena automatically dooms neighborhoods. ?Fenway Park is a beautiful example of a large entertainment-type building sitting in a neighborhood that?s very vital,? says Dean Almy, director of the Dallas Urban Laboratory, ?and one of the things that makes it vital is that it isn?t all about Fenway Park.?
But mainly, it shows that these districts work better without all the bureaucratic attachment parenting. A great example is Cincinnati, where, rather than busting in with relocation plans and a branding scheme, the city has designated five neighborhoods Community Entertainment Districts where aspiring restaurateurs can simply get a liquor license directly from the state for about $1,500, rather than on the open market where they cost up to $30,000.
Milwaukee has taken a similarly hands-off approach to Water Street, an area on the city?s waterfront where a fairly raucous bar scene emerges nightly. Daniel Campo, assistant professor of architecture and planning at Morgan State University, co-authored a study of the Water Street scene and identified several factors that make it work: Small, older buildings (cheap enough to open a dive bar in), flexible facades (no historic designations), open late (naturally) and located on a slightly dicey fringe of town where chaos can unfold.
Campo characterizes such spaces as areas of ?benign neglect,? neighborhoods where? entertainment zones can naturally emerge. ?These are places where no one lives, the cops don?t go there, people don?t care about that area.? He compares it to New York in the ?70s and ?80s, when the police had bigger fish to fry than kids drinking beer on the street. ?You have to be comfortable with the way these places work. There?s going to be loud people, messes on the sidewalk ? it?s not for everyone.? They?re an example of what philosopher Michel Foucault called heterotopias: ?Neither utopian or dystopian, but a paradoxical combination of both.?
Water Street is an example of how, when the city declines to step in, citizens will. In a less cacophonous way, Cleveland has done this with its Gordon Square Arts District, where a group of nonprofits got together and created their own urban district where theaters already existed. ?You had three very humble nonprofit organizations, no powerful boards, that just needed capital improvements,? says the District?s executive director Joy Roller. Their early efforts got $2 million to encourage arts in the area and established Cleveland as a ?thought leader? in arts-district development.
What these areas of Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Cleveland have in common is (and I hate to even utter this often meaningless phrase) urban authenticity. It?s a notion that gets tossed around a lot, but here it truly applies ? people know when they?re being handed an experience that was created by committee for purely economic purposes. Planned districts are about ?applying a label and hoping your city lives up to it,? says Kennedy. Instead, cities should ?foster a natural emergence of character. You never know what?s going to pop up.?

Pope's butler vows to help Vatican scandal probe
VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The biggest scandal to rock the Vatican in decades widened Monday with the pope's butler, arrested for allegedly having confidential documents in his home, agreeing to cooperate with investigators ? raising the specter that higher-ranking ecclesial heads may soon roll.
Few believe butler Paolo Gabriele worked alone to leak dozens of documents shedding light on power struggles, corruption and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church. The leaks have tormented the Vatican for months and painted a picture of a church hierarchy in utter disarray.
Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after Holy See documents were found inside his Vatican City apartment, adding an unfathomable Hollywood twist to the already sordid Vatileaks scandal. He remains in custody in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.
Gabriele's lawyer, Carlo Fusco, said Monday his client was "very serene and calm," despite the whirlwind of speculation surrounding his arrest. He said Gabriele himself had told the Vatican judge investigating the case that he would "respond to all the questions and will collaborate with investigators to ascertain the truth."
Italian media reported Monday that a cardinal is suspected of playing a major role in the scandal. However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports categorically. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned but insisted "there is no cardinal under suspicion."
But Lombardi acknowledged that the investigation continues.
And on Monday, Italian daily La Repubblica published a rambling interview with what it described as another Vatican "mole," someone who described the various agendas at play behind the leaks.
The unnamed leaker said the aim was to show how weak Pope Benedict XVI is, the fears of his secretary of state, and to make clear that the "fundamental role of the church is to defend the Gospel, not accumulate power and money."
Lombardi dismissed as "pure fantasy" such a rash of unsourced reports about the investigation in the Italian media, which have been on a frenzy ever since reports of Gabriele's detention emerged Friday.
Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders have said they were baffled by his alleged involvement, and Lombardi said Monday that the entire scandal has caused pain throughout the Vatican.
Benedict, who in March appointed a commission of cardinals to investigate the leaks, was being kept informed of developments and is "aware of the delicate situation that the Roman curia is going through," Lombardi said.
He acknowledged the "negative image" of the Vatican that was emerging from the scandal but said the developments made it ever more important to "reestablish a climate of clarity, truth, transparency and trust as soon as possible."
The Vatileaks scandal broke in January when Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi broadcast letters from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.
The scandal widened over the following months with documents leaked to Italian journalists that laid bare power struggles inside the Vatican over its efforts to show greater financial transparency and comply with international norms to fight money laundering. There was even a leak of a memo claiming that Benedict would die this year.
The scandal reached a peak last weekend, when Nuzzi published an entire book based on a trove of new documentation, including personal correspondence to and from the pope and his private secretary, much of which paints Benedict's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in a negative light.
Vito Mancuso, an Italian theologian, told reporters at a press launch of the book "His Holiness" that the documents, many of which point to Bertone's involvement in scandals that have afflicted the papacy, all appeared aimed at providing evidence for why he should resign.
"Looking at the documents in succession, it seems like you're seeing a series of bullets aimed at hitting Bertone," Mancuso said.
Bertone, 77, was Benedict's loyal No. 2 at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before being named secretary of state. With no diplomatic or broad administrative experience coming into the job, he has earned not a few critics inside the Vatican bureaucracy.
The Vatican probe into the leaks is actually working on several tracks: Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. The Vatican secretariat of state is pursuing an administrative probe. And the three cardinals appointed by Benedict are acting in a sort of supervisory role, looking beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said.
They report directly to the pope and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them, Lombardi said.
The group is headed by Cardinal Julian Herranz, an Opus Dei prelate who headed the Vatican's legal office as well as the disciplinary commission of the Vatican bureaucracy before retiring.
Gabriele's arrest occurred almost simultaneously with another stunning development inside the secretive walls of the Vatican: the ouster of Benedict's hand-picked president of the Vatican bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, himself close to Opus. The bank's board took a vote of no-confidence last week to oust him for failing to do his job.
Bank board member Carl Anderson told The Associated Press that the ouster had no political undertones and that the board wasn't taking cues from Bertone. He said it was purely a business decision since Gotti Tedeschi had become an obstacle to the bank's efforts to be more transparent in its financial dealings. Gotti Tedeschi hasn't responded to the accusations.
The chaos of the scandal came amid new developments in one of the Vatican's most enduring mysteries, the case of Emanuela Orlandi, the 15-year-old daughter of a Vatican employee who disappeared in 1983 while on her way to a music lesson in Rome.
On Sunday, Orlandi's brother led a march to the Vatican in hope that Benedict would offer them a prayer following the unearthing of the tomb of a mobster alleged to have kidnapped her. The crypt, inside an Opus Dei church in Rome, yielded hundreds of old bone fragments that are being examined for a trace of the girl.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The privately bankrolled Dragon capsule made a historic arrival at the International Space Station on Friday, captured by astronauts wielding a giant robot arm.
SpaceX is the first private company to attempt such a feat: the first commercial cargo delivery into the cosmos.
"Just awesome," said SpaceX's billionaire maestro, Elon Musk, of PayPal fame.
U.S. astronaut Donald Pettit used the space station's 58-foot robot arm to snare the gleaming white Dragon after a few hours of extra checks and maneuvers. The two vessels came together while sailing above Australia.
"Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail," Pettit announced from 250 miles up once he locked onto Dragon's docking mechanism.
"You've made a lot of folks happy down here over in Hawthorne and right here in Houston," radioed NASA's Mission Control. "Great job guys."
NASA controllers clapped as their counterparts at SpaceX's control center in Hawthorne, Calif. ? including Musk ? lifted their arms in triumph and jumped out of their seats to exchange high fives. The two control rooms worked together, as equal partners, to pull off the feat.
Although cargo hauls have become routine, Friday's linkup was significant in that an individual company pulled it off. That chore was previously reserved for a small, elite group of government agencies.
Not only that, the SpaceX Dragon is designed to safely return items, a huge benefit that disappeared with NASA's space shuttles. The vessel is the first U.S. craft to visit the station since the final shuttle flight last summer.
The unmanned capsule is carrying 1,000 pounds of supplies on this unprecedented test flight.
Two hours after the capture, the crew attached the Dragon to the space station as the congratulations poured in. They'll start unpacking the capsule on Saturday.
"Now that a U.S. company has proven its ability to resupply the space station, it opens a new frontier for commercial opportunities in space ? and new job creation opportunities right here in the U.S.," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement.
After this test flight, SpaceX ? officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? has a contract to make a dozen delivery runs. It is one of several companies vying for NASA's cargo business and a chance to launch Americans from U.S. soil.
SpaceX launched the capsule from Cape Canaveral on Tuesday with its Falcon 9 rocket. On Thursday, the Dragon capsule came within 1? miles of the space station in a practice fly-by. It returned to the neighborhood early Friday so Pettit, along with Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers could capture it with the station's robot arm.
First, the capsule went through a series of stop-and-go demonstrations to prove it was under good operating control.
NASA ordered extra checks of the Dragon's imaging systems as the capsule drew ever closer to the space station, putting the entire operation slightly behind schedule. At one point, SpaceX controllers ordered a retreat because of a problem with on-board tracking sensors.
Given that the Dragon is a brand new type of vehicle and this is a test flight, the space agency insisted on proceeding cautiously. A collision by vehicles traveling at orbital speed ? 17,500 mph ? could prove disastrous for the space station.
President Barack Obama is pushing commercial ventures in orbit so NASA can concentrate on grander destinations like asteroids and Mars. Obama's chief scientific advisor, John Holdren, called Friday's linkup "an achievement of historic scientific and technological."
"It's essential we maintain such competition and fully support this burgeoning and capable industry to get U.S. astronauts back on American launch vehicles as soon as possible," he said in a statement.
Without the shuttle, NASA astronauts must go through Russia, an expensive and embarrassing situation for the U.S. after a half-century of orbital self-sufficiency. Once companies master supply runs, they hope to tackle astronaut ferry runs.
Musk, who founded SpaceX a decade ago and helped create PayPal, said he can have astronauts riding his Dragon capsules to orbit in three or four years.
The space station has been relying on Russian, Japanese and European cargo ships for supplies ever since the shuttles retired. None of those, however, can bring anything of value back; they're simply loaded with trash and burn up in the atmosphere.
By contrast, the Dragon is designed to safely re-enter the atmosphere, parachuting into the ocean like the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules did back in the 1960s. Assuming all goes well Friday, the space station's six-man crew will release the Dragon next Thursday after filling it with science experiments and equipment.
Going into Tuesday's launch of this Dragon, NASA had contributed $381 million to SpaceX in seed money. The company has invested more than $1 billion in this commercial effort over the past 10 years.

Buying in Oklahoma City: Cheaper Than Renting
Should I rent or should I buy? This is always a major question when consumers are looking at pros and cons. With the current market that answer is obvious ? buy! With the only two exceptions being San Francisco and Honolulu, buying a home is much more affordable than renting one. Oklahoma City can consider itself especially lucky because it falls in the top five metro areas where buying is a much better deal.
Rent is on the rise, so saving up to make that down payment is a challenge. Also, each market is different. In New York City for example they have many submarkets. If you?re in Manhattan it?s more affordable to rent, but if you?re in a suburb like Westchester County, buying is the better option.
An Oklahoma City buyer should also be very grateful they are not looking to buy in the San Francisco market! A studio in San Francisco is selling for 13.1 times what rent is and a three bedroom or larger is selling for 18 times the rent. There are new studies that show a change in the home price trend. According to professor Ken H. Johnson from Florida International, home prices nationally have bottomed out. Johnson believes the marketing is recovering, and housing will return to its traditional role as a safe investment. Foreclosures in Oklahoma City are also offering lower prices and more options to first time home buyers looking for a great deal.
Confidence in your investment is something that?s been missing in the real estate market, and finally the trends show it?s coming back.
We are local real estate experts that would love to assist you in finding your Oklahoma City home! Please contact us today to start working with a local-expert in the area.

12 great Memorial Day getaways
Thinking about taking a break for Memorial Day? Now is the time to start planning. To point you in the right direction, we looked for celebrations across America that offered something special in honor of the Memorial Day holiday, be it a patriotic tribute, a celeb-worthy pool party, an epic blues festival or a vineyard tour.
But reading about a party that's taking place miles and miles from home is frustrating, not fun. That's why we highlighted places that are easily accessible no matter where you are in the continental U.S. (all of the cities called out under "easy getaway" are within either a 1.5-hour flight or four-hour drive from the featured destination). Consider this your guide to three-day weekend bliss.
Palm Springs, Calif. -- For guaranteed summer weather
Why go this weekend:?While most beach seasons are just beginning, Memorial Day marks the end of bearable temps in the desert, so hotels and operators are running specials for the holiday. Though other parts of California will be in the midst of "May Gray" and "June Gloom," Palm Springs still has nonstop sunshine?plus dozens of vintage shops, acclaimed restaurants such as?Copley's on Palm Canyon?(where celebrity chef Andrew Copley whips up So Cal comfort food like lobster pot pie) and an enduring love for all things mid-century (its hotels and private homes offer some of the best examples of 1950s modern architecture in the country). It also makes a great base camp for exploring the striking desert landscape of?Joshua Tree National Park?through hikes, mountain biking, or rock climbing.
Where to stay: Book one of the 155 pet-friendly rooms, with pool or mountain views and breakfast included, at the hip and affordable Palm Springs Travelodge. Call and mention "Budget Travel" for 20 percent off bookings over the weekend.?From $115 per night,?palmcanyonhotel.com.
?Easy getaway from: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Phoenix; Las Vegas.
Washington, D.C.?--?For patriotism, pomp, and circumstance
Why go this weekend: As you might guess, D.C. is the most patriotic place to celebrate the holiday, with a parade and plenty of pomp and circumstance taking place during special military ceremonies. The Thursday before Memorial Day, soldiers at?Arlington National Cemetery?put flags before each gravestone. On Memorial Day, a wreath-laying ceremony happens at the Tomb of the Unknowns?President Obama spoke at last year's ceremony?and the U.S. Army Band, Pershing's Own, performs. Men in uniform also march in the National Memorial Day Parade along the National Mall. Don't miss the?National Memorial Day Concert?Sunday on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Where to stay: Kimpton Hotels is running a Memorial Day weekend special in five of its hip properties. Check in Thursday or Friday and stay for three nights for the $120 a night rate at the Helix, $130 per night at the Rouge, $140 a night at Topaz or the Madera, or $150 per night at the Palomar Washington D.C., all in northwest D.C. near The White House, when you mention booking code "PMEM" (that's over 25 percent savings off of normal rates).?From $120 per night over Memorial Day weekend,?kimptonhotels.com.
?Easy getaway from:?Albany, N.Y.; Baltimore; Boston; Charleston, S.C.; Columbus, Ohio; Hartford, Conn.; Louisville, Ky.; Nashville; New York; Providence, R.I.
Las Vegas?--?For free rock concerts and parties by the pool
Why go this weekend: Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas is one of the busiest times of the year, along with New Year's Eve.
Parties held around the resorts' elaborate pools are the big event, and become daylight nightclubs with DJs, drink carts, bottle service, cabanas and more. To get in on the action, grab a chaise at the Venus Pool Club at?Caesars Palace.?(If you're a guest, there is no cover charge for hunkering down poolside until 1 p.m; afterward, women pay $10 and men $30 to attend. Caesars Palace is one of the few properties that allows non-guests to enjoy the party for a cover charge ? women get in free until 1 p,m. and pay $10 after that, while men are charged a $30 cover all day.)
The Rock of Vegas free summer concert series also kicks off this weekend at the?Fremont Street Experience?in downtown Las Vegas, and runs every Saturday night thru Labor Day with performances by Vince Neil of Motley Crue, Poison front-man Brett Michaels, and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister.
Where to stay: The Orleans Hotel & Casino is just off the main drag and offers free shuttle service to and from the Strip every 30-45 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. The hotel offers its own casino, comedy club, cabaret lounge, Irish pub, movie theater, bowling alley, and playgrounds and arcades for the kiddies.?From $95 per night over Memorial Day weekend,?orleanscasino.com.
Easy getaway from: Los Angeles; San Francisco.
Saint Louis -- For comfort food, a blues festival and the ultimate treasure hunt
Why go this weekend:?This year, Soldier's Memorial Park will host the?Bluesweek Festival, free from Friday to Sunday, with performances by more than 50 musicians, including local blues legend Arthur Williams. If all that music whets your appetite, head to the Schlafly Tap Room on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Pork Shop, a combination community garage sale and neighborhood bar-b-que, featuring local pork and plenty of Schlafly beer. You'll need all this fuel to tackle the largest flea market in the Midwest,?Gypsy Caravan, an annual Memorial Day event organized for the 40th year by the St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association.
Where to stay: Downtown, the 179-room Roberts Mayfair Hotel has a rooftop pool and emerged from a $9 million makeover in March 2011. You can get the MetroLink light rail two blocks from the hotel, which will take you to Soldiers Memorial and other downtown sites.?From $149 a night,?robertsmayfairhotel.com.
Easy getaway from: Chicago; Cincinnati; Kansas City, Mo.; Memphis, Tenn.
Portsmouth, N.H. -- For seaside New England charm
Why go this weekend: Portsmouth keeps popping up on lists of cool, small towns, and Memorial Day weekend, when locals and visitors alike come out en force to honor our veterans, is a great time to explore the area. Sitting at the northern point of New Hampshire's brief coastline, the 17th-century seaport here is one of the oldest in America. Every year, the U.S. Navy conducts a ceremony at the?USS Albacore Museum & Memorial Park, a 1953 test submarine that is now a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, set in a park honoring those lost in deep-sea battles or tragedies.
Where to stay: The Ale House Inn, a 130-year-old former brewery, sits right downtown at Market Square. Its 10 contemporary rooms come with complimentary in-room iPads.?From $139 per night,?alehouseinn.com.
Easy getaway from: Boston; Hartford, Conn.; Portland, Maine; Providence, R.I.
Austin?--?For boating season and outdoor fun
Why go this weekend: Head to Lake Travis to soak up some of Austin's best weather of the year, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 80s. Memorial Day kicks off boating season here, so the place to be is the lake.
To get in on the action, check out?Austin's REI store's schedule of events?to find out what classes and events are on offer this weekend or rent a ski boat at?Just for Fun?($75 for one hour). If you'd rather be a spectator, catch a glimpse of the Capital of Texas Triathlon on Memorial Day, an event founded in 1991 that brings in 3,000 participants annually. Things get started with a swim at Lady Bird Lake before athletes break out the bikes for a race through Austin, leading up to a foot race around the southern part of the lake.
Where to stay: The Mansion at Judges' Hill is a reasonably priced, 48-room boutique hotel. Plus, the turn-of-the-century property is walking distance from downtown.?From $129 per night,?mansionatjudgeshill.com.
Easy getaway from: Atlanta; Dallas.
Charleston, S.C.?--?For high art with Southern hospitality
Why go this weekend:?One of the earliest observances of Memorial Day was by a group of freed slaves and took place weeks after the Civil War ended in 1865 in Charleston's Hampton Park. Today, the world-renowned?Spoleto Festival?starts its two-week run this weekend, filling the historic city's theaters, churches and outdoor spaces with opera, theater, jazz, symphonies, choruses and visual arts. Highlights this year include the urban dance fused cabaret show, Traces; ukulele prodigy Jake Shimabukuro; Brazilian vocalist Virginia Rodrigues; and Kepler, a new operatic piece by Philip Glass. Tickets can be purchased on a per-event basis, with prices ranging from $10 to $130.
Where to stay: Rooms can be hard to come by during Spoleto, so for last-minute travelers, we recommend Lodge Alley Inn, a time-share that rents its unreserved rooms starting seven days in advance. It's an old Masonic temple with choices of a studio or a one- or two-bedroom condo, all with kitchenettes. From $209,?bluegreenonline.com.?
?Alternately, you can stay across the river at the Hampton Inn/Charleston Mount Pleasant-Patriot's Point.?It's a short drive to downtown over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, and the rates are more affordable than those in the city center.?From $169 per night,?hamptoninn.hilton.com.
?Easy getaway from: Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Miami; Washington, D.C.
Columbia Gorge, Ore. -- For wine tasting along the river
Why go this weekend:?Over Memorial Day weekend, more than 30 wineries and tasting rooms in the scenic Columbia Gorge area of Oregon, which borders Washington State to the north, will be holding open houses featuring such events as barrel tastings and special releases.?Maryhill Winery?toasts its 11th anniversary with live music, tasting specials, the unveiling of their brand new Reserve Room, and more. Outdoors, there are tournament-quality bocce ball courts, an amphitheater and a vine-covered arbor terrace, all with sweeping views of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Gorge. Visit?Cascade Cliffs Vineyard & Winery?all weekend for live folk music, complimentary local cheeses, tastings, and vineyard tours.
Where to stay: Historic Hood River Hotel was originally built in 1911 and restored in 1988-no two of the 41 rooms are alike and each is decorated with reproductions of antique furniture. Why go this weekend:?Fine art and pop culture descend on the Rockies over Memorial Day weekend. The?Downtown Denver Arts Festival?kicks off its 14th year on Friday, May 25, hosting more than 135 local artists from all over the state. The free festival lasts all weekend at Denver Pavilions, and everything from 3D mixed media to jewelry to photography will be featured. If live music is more your style, try the?Denver Day of Rock?on Saturday, May 26, when 20 bands ? including the 1980s rock group Toto ? treat audiences to a series of free rock concerts from 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. along the 16th Street Mall. Best of all, the concerts benefit?Concerts for Kids?and?Food Bank of the Rockies, two local organizations dedicated to fighting child hunger ? everyone is asked to bring canned food to drop off at designated spots around the venue.
Where to stay: Area hotels, like The Burnsley All Suite Hotel are offering special Day of Rock packages just for Memorial Day weekend, including perks like free parking, shuttle service to downtown Denver, and daily breakfast.?From $129 a night,?burnsley.com.?Participating hotels?throughout Denver also offer deals throughout the summer.

New York, N.Y. -- To meet military heroes, in all their splendor ??
Why go this weekend:?Each spring, New York City hosts?Fleet Week, taking place this year from May 23 through 30, an event where locals and visitors get a chance to see military demonstrations, tour visiting ships docked in Manhattan and Staten Island, and meet the men and women currently serving in the U.S. Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.
Families will want to catch the?Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade, a tradition in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn since 1867. All Veterans, regardless of age or war, are invited to participate. The parade starts at 11 A.M., runs along 3rd Avenue towards Marine Avenue, and continues to 4th Ave. before making its way to John Paul Jones Park for a ceremony in honor of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Where to stay: Finding a reasonably priced hotel in New York City is daunting any time of year, and especially so during a holiday. We wouldn't normally steer you to a large chain, but we make an exception for the Holiday Inn Long Island City-Manhattan View. It's just five minutes from Manhattan by subway and, true to its name, you can expect scenic views of the city skyline from most rooms.?From $202 per night,?holidayinn.com.

Kid-friendly areas sponsored by Cartoon Network and Publix Super Markets will also be set up in the park from noon until 6 P.M. while the live music plays from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
For more family fun, take the kids to?Stone Mountain Park, a 35-minute drive from Atlanta, for some kid-friendly outdoor activities such as the "Sky Hike," a ropes-and-ladders obstacle course through the treetops. In honor of Memorial Day, the park is hosting evening fireworks and a laser show from Sunday through Monday (from $28 for those over age 12, from $22 for children ages 3-11).
Where to stay: Atlanta Marriott Suites Midtown is a family-friendly, all-suite experience that is within walking distance of Piedmont Park and just a 10-minute drive from the Georgia Aquarium.?From $119 per night,marriott.com.
?Easy getaway from: Savannah; Charleston, S.C.; New Orleans; Nashville, Tenn.; Charlotte, N.C.; Orlando, Fla.
Miami -- For a beach party like no other?
Why go this weekend: Even fun-loving Vegas can't quite compete with the blow-out bash that takes place in Miami over Memorial Day weekend. Each year roughly 250,000 party-goers descend on the area for a booze-soaked bacchanalia full of music, dancing and lots and lots of skin.
Clubs around town host special Memorial Day kick-off parties, such as the one taking place on Sunday, May 29 at?Cameo?with DJ Drama, but the event everyone looks forward to is the Best of the Best Concert on Sunday, May 27 ? a 10-hour long music extravaganza that features A-list acts like Rihanna, French Montana, and Serani in downtown Miami's Bicentennial Park (tickets start at $40,?bestofthebestconcert.com). Of course, the point of the weekend is to honor our veterans, and Miami does so in style with the March of Colors ? a parade that starts with a gun volley at All Wars Memorial Park at 10 a.m. and then traverses the Snake Creek Canal Bridge. There is also a wreath laying ceremony on Monday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Miami Beach Police Headquarters.
