Graphite, more commonly known as pencil lead, could become the next big thing in the quest for smaller and less power-hungry electronics.

Resembling chicken wire on a nano scale, graphene ? single sheets of graphite ? is only one atom thick, making it the world's thinnest material. Two million graphene sheets stacked up would not be as thick as a credit card.

The tricky part physicists have yet to figure out how to control the flow of electrons through the material, a necessary prerequisite for putting it to work in any type of electronic circuit. Graphene behaves very different than silicon, the material currently used in semiconductors.

Last year, a research team led by University of Arizona physicists cleared the first hurdle by identifying boron nitride, a structurally identical but non-conducting material, as a suitable mounting surface for single-atom sheets of graphene. The team also showed that in addition to providing mechanical support, boron nitride improves the electronic properties of graphene by smoothening out fluctuations in the electronic charges.

Now the team found that boron nitride also influences how the electrons travel through the graphene. Published in Nature Physics, the results open up new ways of controlling the electron flow through graphene.

"If you want to make a transistor for example, you need to be able to stop the flow of electrons," said Brian LeRoy, an assistant professor in the University of Arizona's department of physics. "But in graphene, the electrons just keep going. It's difficult to stop them."

LeRoy said relativistic quantum mechanical effects that come into play at atomic scales cause electrons to behave in ways that go against our everyday experiences of how objects should behave.

Take tennis balls, for example.

"Normally, when you throw a tennis ball against a wall, it bounces back," LeRoy said. "Now think of the electrons as tennis balls. With quantum mechanical effects, there is a chance the ball would go through and end up on the other side. In graphene, the ball goes through 100 percent of the time."

This strange behavior makes it difficult to control where electrons are going in graphene. However, as LeRoy's group has now discovered, mounting graphene on boron nitride prevents some of the electrons from passing to the other side, a first step toward a more controlled electron flow.

The group achieved this feat by placing graphene sheets onto boron nitride at certain angles, resulting in the hexagonal structures in both materials to overlap in such a way that secondary, larger hexagonal patterns are created. The researchers call this structure a superlattice.

If the angle is just right, they found, a point is reached where almost no electrons go through.

"You could say we created holes in the wall," LeRoy said, "and as soon as the wall has holes in it, we find that some of the tennis balls no longer go through. It's the opposite of what you would expect. That shows you how weird this is. It's all due to those relativistic quantum effects."

The discovery puts the technology a bit closer to someday being able to actually control the flow of electrons through the graphene, the authors of the paper said.

"The effect depends on the size of the hexagonal pattern resulting from the overlapping sheets," explained Matthew Yankowitz, a first-year graduate student in LeRoy's lab and the study's lead author.

The pattern, he explained, creates a periodic modulation of the potential ? picture a ball rolling across an egg carton.

"It's a purely electronic effect brought about by the structure of the two materials and how they sit on top of each other," Yankowitz said. "It's similar to the Moir? pattern you see when someone wears a striped shirt on TV."

As of now, the researchers are not yet able to control how the graphene and boron nitride end up oriented relative to each other when they combine the two materials. Therefore, they make many samples and check the structure of each one under an electron microscope.

"With our scanning tunneling microscope, we can get an image of each superlattice and measure its size," Yankowitz said. "We take a picture and see what the pattern looks like. If the hexagonal pattern is too small, the samples are no good and we throw them out."

Yankowitz said about 10 to 20 percent of samples showed the desired effect.

If it becomes possible to someday automate this process, graphene-based microelectronics might be well on their way to propel us from the silicon age to the graphene age.

I saw better PC performance after using Total Defense PC Tune-Up , but the improvements fell just short of those I saw after using the current tune-up utility champ, Editors' Choice award-winning Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 ($39.99, 4.5 stars). What's more, Total Defense's three-PC license limitation pales in comparison with Iolo's unlimited installs.

Getting Started
The gray-and-white welcome screen prompts you to execute the first scan after you launch Total Defense PC Tune-Up, which will test your computer for speed, stability, and performance. Clicking "Scan" doesn't cause the app to immediately scan your PC. Instead, Total Defense PC Tune-Up launches "Scan Options" where you set the software to scan your computer's hard disks (which I recommend). You can contribute your computer's pre-scan performance to Total Defense's database by inputting information into an in-app form, but I'd rather see a system in place like that in SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner (Free, 4.5 stars) which uses community-driven feedback to help you determine files to uninstall.

The software displays benchmark results that measure your PC's performance against other recently scanned PCs after the scan is complete. The "Results" screen lists over a dozen test reports after the scan in system scan is completed. Areas that scored well were highlighted in green text, while trouble spots were highlighted in red text. Mousing over a result opens a small balloon that explains the function and importance of each test?a nice inclusion for those who want to know how the app operates. Still, real-time system monitoring?a PC Tools Performance Toolkit ($39.95, 4 stars) feature?would've been a nice addition.

Clicking "Start Tune-Up" began the cleanup process, which consisted of defragging the disc, updating drivers, optimizing system restore points, removing junk files, applying registry fixes, and more. You can remove any of these processes by unchecking one or more options in Scan Options.

Performance Improvements
I tested Total Defense PC Tune-Up's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing three tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool, measuring boot times, and transferring a 1.1GB folder of mixed media to external storage?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before Total Defense PC Tune-Up scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,903 Geekbench score, booted in 50.3 seconds, and transferred the 1.1GB folder in 40.5 seconds.

After using Total Defense PC Tune-Up, the system saw improved performance: The GeekBench score rose to 5,991 (Iolo scored 6,064). The boot time decreased to 40.2 seconds (37.1 seconds with Iolo). The file transfer speed dropped to 39.8 seconds (a hair swifter than Iolo's 40.8 seconds). The overall system performance was fast and snappy?windows and menus opened quickly.

LONDON -- The government of British Prime Minister David Cameron was reeling on Monday after a video emerged showing his Conservative Party's top fundraiser claiming to offer access to senior politicians in exchange for large donations.

In a sting operation, The Sunday Times (the newspaper operates behind a paywall) secretly videotaped fundraiser Peter Cruddas? discussing donations. The film showed him telling undercover reporters: "200 grand ($317,000), 250 is premier league ... it'll be awesome for your business."


If donors met Cameron, Cruddas claimed in the recording, "within that room, everything is confidential and you will be able to ask him practically any question that you want."

'We will listen to you'
He suggested they could even influence party policy, saying: "If you are unhappy about something, we will listen to you and we will put it into the policy committee at (the prime minister's official residence)."

In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain expressed the need to continue placing 'massive pressure' on Iran without resorting to military action.

Cameron responded by saying Cruddas' actions had been "completely unacceptable." Cruddas, a millionaire, resigned within hours of the report.

Obama, Cameron stand in united front

Cruddas made the remarks to two journalists he thought were international financiers and who were accompanied by a lobbyist.

Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain and President Barack Obama have a personal bond that helps define their working relationship. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

"Because we depend on donors so much we have to be careful" to show "you cannot buy access," he said according to The Sunday Times. But, he told the undercover reporters, if you donate "you could well be at a private house having a private dinner with?George Osborne, David Cameron, William Hague, the chairman around the table."

Osborne, the cabinet minister in charge of economic and financial matters, and Foreign Minister William Hague are both members of Cameron's center-right Conservative Party, which leads the governing coalition alongside the Liberal Democrats.

Embarrassing
The funding issue is embarrassing for Cameron, who promised before coming to power in May 2010 to curb corporate lobbying, saying it was the "next big scandal waiting to happen."

Following the report, Cameron admitted he had used his official home at 10 Downing Street to host dinners for Conservative donors.

Before David Cameron embarked on his trip to the United States, Brian Williams sat down with Britain's youngest prime minister in two centuries. Cameron talked about his relationship with President Obama, the war in Afghanistan and even Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. Rock Center Anchor and Managing Editor Brian Williams reports.

The scandal threatened to undo Cameron's efforts to shake off his party's image of being too close to the interests of business and the rich as Britain undergoes an austerity program to cut its budget deficit.

"This is not the way that we raise money in the Conservative party, it should not have happened," said Cameron. "I will make sure that there is a proper party inquiry to make sure this can't happen again."

While there were also tax cuts for lower earners, the government's recent budget went down badly with many Britons, giving the impression the government was looking after the wealthy and cared little for those suffering rising unemployment and falling incomes as the economy struggles to recover from recession.

Despite mounting pressure after the recent civilian killings in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain reaffirmed their plans to slowly dial back their military presence. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Previous attempts to reform the political funding system have foundered on the Conservatives' reluctance to cap donations from wealthy individuals and the opposition Labour Party's desire to avoid limits on contributions from unions.?

94% Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Film critic Molly Haskell famously described 'The Godfather' as "grandly mournful," a beautifully apt description. 'Once Upon a Time in Anatolia' is just as mournful but without the grandeur -- and without a story. It beats me why 'Anatolia' took second prize at Cannes last year. But 2011 was a tough year in general for Cannes. Top prize went to "The Tree of Life," which in my view was run-of-the-mill Buddhism tarted up with kaleidoscopic visuals. In my review of 'Tree,' I described it as a bloated over-statement. I'd describe 'Anatolia' as a bloated non-statement. If it can be imagined, 'Anatolia' has even fewer ideas than 'Tree.' And Cannes was all aflutter over these two films? It must have been a very undistinguished group of films in competition last year. 'Anatolia' is a long, slow, boring dirge. Turkish filmmaker Nuri Ceylan, who has a very good reputation among serious cinephiles (but this is the first Ceylan film I have seen), takes a bunch of middle-aged male actors out to the remote, frighteningly barren countryside of Turkey in the middle of the night and follows them around with his camera as they amble about in a sleep-deprived stupor. They are playing policemen on a murder investigation. Why they are conducting an investigation in the middle of the night is never explained. Their caravan of broken-down vehicles pulls up to one barren location after the next, and all the men look around the ground for clues. Most of them are overweight, semi-educated imbeciles -- peasants with a high school diploma. The only one with real intelligence is a doctor, who inexplicably is along for the ride. That doctor becomes the heart of the movie, and gradually he does emerge as a slightly interesting character. But only slightly. He, like all the other characters, has nothing to do, so his character can only be contemplated in the abstract. In the last half-hour of this overly long film (two-and-a-half hours), I started to feel that Ceylan was a true artist. Probably only a minor one, but a true one. He does have something mournful to say about life and about people that is genuinely artistic. I just don't think he captured his artistic viewpoint very effectively here, either in the writing of the script or the directing of the film shoot. The cinematography, art direction, and editing is consistently pedestrian. My hunch is that he consciously chose a flat style -- flat neo-realist style is very popular in high-art cinema these days (see also Iran's "A Separation," which has become such an art-house hit in America and is likely to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film). But I don't think it served Ceylan's purpose at all. I can appreciate that he wanted to portray his characters as mind-numbingly boring and flat. But when the man behind the camera starts to seem mind-numbingly boring and flat, something has gone wrong -- at least for me.

Finding may help develop new treatments for infectious diseases, cancer

UCLA researchers pinpointed a new mechanism that potently activates T-cells, the group of white blood cells that play a major role in fighting infections.

Published March 25 online in Nature Medicine, the team specifically studied how dendritic cells, immune cells located at the site of infection, become more specialized to fight the leprosy pathogen known as Mycobacterium leprae. Dendritic cells, like scouts in the field of a military operation, deliver key information about an invading pathogen that helps activate the T-cells in launching a more effective attack.

It was previously known that dendritic cells were important for a strong immune response and the number of such cells at an infection site positively correlated with a robust reaction. However, until now it was poorly understood how dendritic cells become more specialized to address specific types of infections.

The researchers found that a protein called NOD2 triggers a cell-signaling molecule called interleukin-32 that induces general immune cells called monocytes to become specialized information-carrying dendritic cells.

"This is the first time that this potent infection-fighting pathway with dendritic cells has been identified, and demonstrated to be important in fighting human disease," said the study's first author Mirjam Schenk, postdoctoral scholar, division of dermatology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

In conducting the study, scientists used monocytes taken from the blood of healthy donors and leprosy patients and incubated the cells with the pathogen M. Leprae or specific parts of the mycobacteria, known to trigger NOD2 and TLR2, both associated with immune system activation.

Scientists wanted to investigate how these proteins might trigger mechanisms that turn on different immune receptors that recognize specific parts of the microbe in an infection. The NOD2 interleukin-32 pathway was the most effective and caused monocytes to develop into dendritic cells that carry critical information about the pathogen to the T-cells.

The team studied the gene expression profiles of the protein-triggered pathways and then also examined how the monocytes of leprosy patients responded to NOD2. Scientists found that NOD2 worked to induce moncytes to dendritic cells in tuberloid leprosy, a milder infection that is more easily contained. The NOD2 pathway was inhibited and could not be activated in lepromatous leprosy, which is more serious and causes widespread infection throughout the body.

"We were surprised to find the high potency of the dendritic cells in triggering certain specific T-cell responses, which may be useful in developing new therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases and cancer," said senior investigator Dr. Robert Modlin, UCLA's Klein Professor of Dermatology and chief of dermatology at the Geffen School of Medicine.

Leprosy, one of the world's oldest known diseases, is a chronic infectious disease that affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, the upper respiratory tract and the eyes and can lead to disfigurement of the hands, face and feet. In 2008, approximately 249,000 new cases of leprosy were reported worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Modlin adds that leprosy is a good model to study immune mechanisms in host defense since it presents as a clinical spectrum that correlates with the level and type of immune response of the pathogen.

The next stage of research will involve trying to further understand how to manipulate the innate immune system to induce a potent immune response in human infections and possibly for cancer immunotherapy as well.

Finding may help develop new treatments for infectious diseases, cancer

UCLA researchers pinpointed a new mechanism that potently activates T-cells, the group of white blood cells that play a major role in fighting infections.

Published March 25 online in Nature Medicine, the team specifically studied how dendritic cells, immune cells located at the site of infection, become more specialized to fight the leprosy pathogen known as Mycobacterium leprae. Dendritic cells, like scouts in the field of a military operation, deliver key information about an invading pathogen that helps activate the T-cells in launching a more effective attack.

It was previously known that dendritic cells were important for a strong immune response and the number of such cells at an infection site positively correlated with a robust reaction. However, until now it was poorly understood how dendritic cells become more specialized to address specific types of infections.

The researchers found that a protein called NOD2 triggers a cell-signaling molecule called interleukin-32 that induces general immune cells called monocytes to become specialized information-carrying dendritic cells.

"This is the first time that this potent infection-fighting pathway with dendritic cells has been identified, and demonstrated to be important in fighting human disease," said the study's first author Mirjam Schenk, postdoctoral scholar, division of dermatology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

In conducting the study, scientists used monocytes taken from the blood of healthy donors and leprosy patients and incubated the cells with the pathogen M. Leprae or specific parts of the mycobacteria, known to trigger NOD2 and TLR2, both associated with immune system activation.

Scientists wanted to investigate how these proteins might trigger mechanisms that turn on different immune receptors that recognize specific parts of the microbe in an infection. The NOD2 interleukin-32 pathway was the most effective and caused monocytes to develop into dendritic cells that carry critical information about the pathogen to the T-cells.

The team studied the gene expression profiles of the protein-triggered pathways and then also examined how the monocytes of leprosy patients responded to NOD2. Scientists found that NOD2 worked to induce moncytes to dendritic cells in tuberloid leprosy, a milder infection that is more easily contained. The NOD2 pathway was inhibited and could not be activated in lepromatous leprosy, which is more serious and causes widespread infection throughout the body.

"We were surprised to find the high potency of the dendritic cells in triggering certain specific T-cell responses, which may be useful in developing new therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases and cancer," said senior investigator Dr. Robert Modlin, UCLA's Klein Professor of Dermatology and chief of dermatology at the Geffen School of Medicine.

Leprosy, one of the world's oldest known diseases, is a chronic infectious disease that affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, the upper respiratory tract and the eyes and can lead to disfigurement of the hands, face and feet. In 2008, approximately 249,000 new cases of leprosy were reported worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Modlin adds that leprosy is a good model to study immune mechanisms in host defense since it presents as a clinical spectrum that correlates with the level and type of immune response of the pathogen.

The next stage of research will involve trying to further understand how to manipulate the innate immune system to induce a potent immune response in human infections and possibly for cancer immunotherapy as well.

Bits of Reality

Ask any physicist to name the top two theories of the 20th century, and you?ll almost always get the same automatic answer: Einstein?s relativity and quantum mechanics. But lately a few 21st century thinkers have hinted that maybe the third-place theory should move up a notch. In the wake of the computer revolution, information theory might deserve to displace relativity in the rankings.

That revisionist perspective reflects a late 20th century twist in the story of that century?s theories: the surreptitious merger of quantum theory with information science. Their origins had been entirely independent. Quantum mechanics arose in the 1920s as the math for describing the odd behavior of atoms and electrons; information theory came along two decades later, as formulas for quantifying communication over telephone lines. For decades the two theories led separate lives in fields of study far removed from one another. While physicists expended their intellectual energy on uniting quantum mechanics with relativity (a quest that continues, still without success), information scientists graduated from telephones to computers with only occasional concern for quanta. But then in the 1980s and ?90s, quantum and information science met, married and produced offspring ? specifically, the intellectual enterprise known today as quantum information theory.

Initially, quantum information snared the attention of physics fans for its possible uses in sending secret codes and creating superfast computers. Those and other potential quantum technologies continue to occupy scientists? time at research centers around the world, from Canada to Austria to Singapore. But theorists pursuing quantum information?s secrets are more motivated by the quest to acquire a deeper understanding of physical reality, and perhaps to grasp more fully the nature of quantum mechanics itself.

?We always stress how interesting are the applications? of quantum information, says theorist J. Ignacio Cirac. ?But actually if you work in this field, you don?t care so much about these things. What you see is that the science that is being done is really fantastic.?

Computing reality

At the heart of quantum information science is a novel representation for information known as the qubit. It?s the quantum analog of the 1s and 0s, or ?bits,? processed by ordinary computers. But a qubit is infused with quantum magic, allowing it be both a 1 and a 0 at the same time. This ?superposition? of identities gives quantum information extraordinary power.

Qubits can, for instance, transmit coded messages with absolute secrecy, typically in the form of particles of light, or photons (SN: 8/16/08, p. 24). Messages sent as a string of qubits, encoded in the orientations of photon vibrations, are secure because any attempt at eavesdropping would alter the message in a detectable way.

Such quantum-secured systems are already commercially available, and may someday be a commercial necessity because of another quantum information application: quantum computing. For certain problems, computing with qubits held in a quantum memory can solve mathematical problems so hard that a standard supercomputer couldn?t find the answer within the lifetime of the universe. One such hard problem is finding the prime factors of very big numbers. Codes based on such problems, which now protect most electronic financial transactions, would be worthless in a world with full-scale quantum computers. (No need to worry about your credit card security just yet, though. Breaking today?s codes would require a quantum computer handling thousands or more qubits; the record for today?s prototypes is merely 14.)

Quantum computers wouldn?t be worth much for general number crunching. They would work only for problems that could be posed in the form of an algorithm amenable to the way quantum weirdness can cancel out wrong answers, allowing only the correct one to survive. But a sufficiently sophisticated quantum computer would be able to simulate molecular systems governed by quantum mechanics. You could harness that power to foretell the outcome of chemical reactions, for instance, without the bother of test tubes. Such computing ability could aid the design of new industrial materials or help develop powerful drugs with fewer side effects.

?Of the currently understood algorithms, the one that seems most promising for applications is simulation of a quantum system,? says Caltech physicist John Preskill. ?We don?t currently envision that you?ll be sending your e-mail on a quantum computer. On the other hand, quantum games might be a blast.?

But for all these wonders, quantum computers and other quantum information processing systems are not mere investment speculation opportunities. They are tools for scientists to dig deeper into reality?s foundations. Quantum information could reveal nuances about the interface between mathematics and the physical world.

Cracking codes, for instance, involves solving the very hard math problem of finding the prime factors of a big number, hundreds of digits long. But the fact that a quantum-computing algorithm can solve such a problem ? as discovered by the mathematician Peter Shor in 1994 ? has deeper implications than just financial eavesdropping.

?Factoring is a hard problem classically,? says Preskill, ?but Shor?s algorithm shows that it is an easy problem quantumly. And so it seems the boundary between what problems are hard and what problems are easy is different in our physical world ? because it?s a quantum world ? than it would be if the world were classical.? In other words, quantum information processing reveals something about math?s relation to physical reality that prequantum scientists couldn?t have imagined.

Or at least that?s what quantum scientists believe. Proving that the physical world really does allow quantum solutions to some hard math problems requires actually building a large-scale quantum computer. ?We hope to be able to verify that these extraordinary computational resources in quantum systems really are part of the way nature behaves,? Preskill noted recently in Vancouver at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. ?We could do so by solving a problem that we think is hard classically ? with a quantum computer, where we can easily verify with a classical computer that the quantum computer got the right answer.?

Factoring would be one example of such a problem ? very hard to solve, but easy to check to see if the answer you get is right. But other hard math problems probably exceed even a quantum computer?s capabilities. ?Some problems are quantumly hard,? says Preskill. Knowing which problems are hard for quantum computers would offer insight into what kinds of mathematical computations are actually possible in the physical universe.

One computational claim challenged by quantum computing, MIT computer scientist Scott Aaronson points out, is a long-held belief called the extended Church-Turing thesis. It basically states that anything feasibly computable by a physical device is also computable by an idealized ?universal? computer known as a Turing machine.

?This is a falsifiable claim about the laws of physics,? Aaronson said at the AAAS meeting. It expresses the belief that if physical laws are like computer code, any reasonable programming language for nature?s laws could emulate another one.

?This would say that any reasonable laws of physics that someone could write down, they can all reasonably simulate any other laws,? Aaronson said.

But Shor?s factoring algorithm contends that quantum computers could do things a Turing machine couldn?t. So either quantum computing is actually impossible (not likely, as that would imply some flaw in quantum mechanics itself), or the Church-Turing thesis is incorrect as a statement about the physical world. Unless somehow there exists an unknown way for an ordinary computer to simulate quantum physics. ?No one has proved that there isn?t one,? said Aaronson. ?But this would be an astounding mathematical discovery.?

Quantum roots

An equally or more profound discovery would be identifying the physical principle that requires reality to obey the rules of quantum mechanics in the first place. In the beginning, the quantum pioneers simply figured out the math that works ? a math that requires the weirdness of multiple possible realities (SN: 11/20/10, p. 15). Inquiring into the underlying reason why such weird math worked so well was long considered foolish. A standard response to junior physicists who raised such questions was ?shut up and calculate.?

But in recent decades, the quest to find a physical principle from which quantum mechanics can be built has become more popular, and quantum information has been at the heart of many such efforts. Much of the work along these lines was inspired by the late physicist John Archibald Wheeler, who believed that quantum physics ? and existence itself ? might have its roots in aspects of information theory. His slogan ?it from bit? summarized the view that reality somehow emerges from cosmic information processing.

Several efforts to derive quantum math from basic principles have echoed the it-from-bit philosophy. Last year, for instance, Giulio Chiribella of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada, and collaborators from Italy showed a way to derive quantum mechanics from a set of five axioms plus one postulate, all rooted in information theory terms (SN: 8/13/11, p. 12).

?In this approach the rules by which information can be processed determine the physical theory, in accordance with Wheeler?s program ?it from bit,? ? Chiribella and Italian colleagues Giacomo Mauro D?Ariano and Paolo Perinotti wrote in Physical Review A.

Their system is built on axioms such as ?causality? ? in essence, the notion that signals from the future cannot affect the present. In other words, the odds of an experiment turning out one way or the other do not depend on a future choice of which measurements to perform. Another axiom, called ?ideal compression,? asserts that the information in a system always can be condensed into an encoded form that could then be decoded to reproduce all of the original information.

All five axioms in this approach reflect basic aspects of ordinary information, no quantum weirdness necessary. ?These axioms represent standard features of information processing that everyone would, more or less implicitly, assume,? Chiribella and colleagues wrote.

Their postulate, however, departs from the nonquantum classical world by introducing what they call the ?purification? principle. That principle is something like a law of conservation of information, contending that all the information a quantum system contains can be recovered by reversing all its interactions with its environment. In practice, of course, keeping track of every interaction of a system with its environment isn?t possible. But as a principle, it implies the ability to know all the information there is to know about a whole system yet remain ignorant of some of its parts. Therein lies the key to quantum weirdness, and that postulate plus the other information-theoretic axioms yields the quantum math that has long perplexed anyone who has tried to understand where it comes from.

Relatively simple

Chiribella and colleagues? axiomatic system is not the only one to reproduce the formulas of quantum physics, though (but they claim theirs is the first to do so using only principles that can be expressed in terms of actual physical operations). And none of the various approaches satisfy everybody, anyway. Some physicists (Wheeler was among them) believe that the physical principle underlying quantum physics should be crisp and clear and even in retrospect, perhaps, obvious.

Christopher Fuchs, a quantum physicist at the Perimeter Institute, argues that the secret principle (or principles) at the core of quantum mechanics ought to be similarly simple to the two pillars of Einstein?s theory of relativity: The speed of light is constant, and the laws of physics do not depend on how you are moving. Axioms that need paragraphs of explanation do not meet this crisp-and-clear test. Fuchs still appreciates information?s role in quantum theory, but he does not believe that Wheeler?s ?it from bit? is the right story.

?I suspect quantum theory is mostly about information,? Fuchs said in a recent interview. ?But there is going to be some piece remaining behind that you really can?t pin down as being a statement about information. Instead I expect it to be a statement about the character of the world.? The distillate that remains, the part that can?t be given an information-theoretic reason, will be our first glimpse into what quantum reality is all about.?
