Taylor Swift Calls Work On 'Lorax' 'Completely Different'

Doing voice-over 'very different from when you're singing songs that you wrote,' Swift tells MTV News.

From the recording studio to the stage, it's certainly clear that Taylor Swift has a knack for expressing her emotions and skills. While the singer/songwriter has graced the silver screen only once, she's taken her talents to the sound booth for her portrayal of Audrey, a tree-loving daydreamer in the upcoming film "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax."

MTV News sat down with Swift recently as she prepared for Friday's release of the famous Dr. Seuss tale, which follows the journey of a young boy who must save endangered trees in hopes of winning a girl's heart. While making music and characterizing an animated girl are two quite-different tasks, if anyone can do it, and do it well, there's no doubt it is Taylor Swift.

"It's a completely different space that you go to in your head," Swift explained about voice-over work. "It's very different from when you're singing songs that you wrote. ...With this, you're sitting there in a booth by yourself having conversations with no one."

Having scripted conversations by yourself and answering questions to a voice you can't even see might seem like a lonely gig, but, as with any of her work, the Grammy-winner found meaning and excitement in her role. Even though Audrey and Swift might not exactly resemble one another physically (Audrey has red hair), the blonde singer/songwriter connected with the character on a deeper level.

"She's heavenly. She's such a day dreamer, and she cares so much about the past," Taylor said. "To some degree, you have to have a priority based on the past and the future as well as the present."

As seen in the trailer, the character of Audrey is fun, bubbly, curious and a big fan of trees. Swift certainly fits all of these traits, and we're looking forward to seeing what she does with the character when "The Lorax" is released Friday.

Oh, and does Taylor dig trees as much as her animated counterpart? "I grew up on a Christmas tree farm, and she's obsessed with trees," she shared.

Do you think Taylor's voice will work well onscreen? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Wealthy, motivated by greed, are more likely to cheat, study finds

The rich really are different from the rest of us, scientists have found ? they are more apt to commit unethical acts because they are more motivated by greed.

People driving expensive cars were more likely than other motorists to cut off drivers and pedestrians at a four-way-stop intersection in the San Francisco Bay Area, UC Berkeley researchers observed. Those findings led to a series of experiments that revealed that people of higher socioeconomic status were also more likely to cheat to win a prize, take candy from children and say they would pocket extra change handed to them in error rather than give it back.

Because rich people have more financial resources, they're less dependent on social bonds for survival, the Berkeley researchers reported Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As a result, their self-interest reigns and they have fewer qualms about breaking the rules.

"If you occupy a more insular world, you're less likely to be sensitive to the needs of others," said study lead author Paul Piff, who is studying for a doctorate in psychology.

But before those in the so-called 99% start feeling ethically superior, consider this: Piff and his colleagues also discovered that anyone's ethical standards could be prone to slip if they suddenly won the lottery and joined the top 1%.

"There is a strong notion that when people don't have much, they're really looking out for themselves and they might act unethically," said Scott Wiltermuth, who researches social status at USC's Marshall School of Business and wasn't involved in the study. "But actually, it's the upper-class people that are less likely to see that people around them need help ? and therefore act unethically."

In earlier studies, Piff documented that wealthy people were less likely to act generously than relatively impoverished people. With this research, he hoped to find out whether wealthy people would also prioritize self-interest if it meant breaking the rules.

The driving experiments offered a way to test the hypothesis "naturalistically," he said. Trained observers hid near a downtown Berkeley intersection and noted the makes, model years and conditions of bypassing cars. Then they recorded whether drivers waited their turn.

It turned out that people behind the wheels of the priciest cars were four times as likely as drivers of the least expensive cars to enter the intersection when they didn't have the right of way. The discrepancy was even greater when it came to a pedestrian trying to exercise a right of way.

There is a significant correlation between the price of a car and the social class of its driver, Piff said. Still, how fancy a car looks isn't a perfect indicator of wealth.

So back in the laboratory, Piff and his colleagues conducted five more tests to measure unethical behavior ? and to connect that behavior to underlying attitudes toward greed.

For instance, the team used a standard questionnaire to get college students to assess their own socioeconomic status and asked how likely subjects were to behave unethically in eight different scenarios.

In one of the quandaries, students were asked to imagine that they bought coffee and a muffin with a $10 bill but were handed change for a $20. Would they keep the money?

In another hypothetical scenario, students realized their professor made a mistake in grading an exam and gave them an A instead of the B they deserved. Would they ask for a grade change?

The patterns from the road held true in the lab ? those most willing to engage in unethical behavior were the ones with the highest social status.

One possible explanation was that wealthy people are simply more willing to acknowledge their selfish side. But that wasn't the issue here. When test subjects of any status were asked to imagine themselves at a high social rank, they helped themselves to more candies from a jar they were told was meant for children in another lab.

Another experiment recruited people from Craigslist to play a "game of chance" that the researchers had rigged. People who reported higher social class were more likely to have favorable attitudes toward greed ? and were more likely to cheat at the game.

"The patterns were just so consistent," Piff said. "It was very, very compelling."

Piff, who is writing a paper about attitudes toward the Occupy movement, said that his team had been accused of waging class warfare from time to time.

"Berkeley has a certain reputation, so yeah, we get that," he said.

But rather than vilify the wealthy, Piff said, he hopes his work leads to policies that help bridge the gap between the haves and have-nots.

Acts as simple as watching a movie about childhood poverty seem to encourage people of all classes to help others in need, he said.

ELVIIS Volvo C30 EV charges from any standard outlet, bills the driver (hands-on)

The electric vehicle is still a fresh enough concept that the issue of redirecting the bill when filling up at a public outlet or a friend's house is of little concern. But once EVs gain more traction and the cost of electricity during that monthly dinner party starts to run upwards of 50 bucks, you'll definitely take notice. ELVIIS, a research collaboration between Ericsson and the Viktoria Institute in Sweden, may be the solution. Instead of pulling power from the grid blindly and billing the outlet's owner, the system provides driver and vehicle information to a server before charging begins, then redirects the cost for power consumed to whatever account you've registered with the vehicle, alleviating any concern about unexpected electricity bills. ELVIIS can theoretically serve other purposes, allowing you to select the least-expensive energy source, for example, or set the car to wait to charge until late-night, when rates are lower.

We jumped into the passenger seat of one of five existing ELVIIS cars -- built around an all-electric Volvo C30 -- and poked around the charging interface. The project isn't fully operational just yet, and was running in demo mode so there's no way to verify that it works as described, but it definitely appears to be solid, with Ericsson providing financial and development support. Eventually, it will use the car's GPS to identify nearby power outlets -- for now, you need to enter a specific outlet ID. There's also an Android app that allows you to monitor and reschedule charging, so if you programmed your car to be completely charged by 7AM but realized that you need to leave at 6, you can make sure you're covered without getting out of bed. But you don't need to go anywhere to see it in action -- just click on past the break.

Reasons to Choose Solid Wood Furniture Instead of Other Types of ...

All new home owners need to make important decisions before they can move into their new home. One of the most important decisions they need to make is about the decoration and furnishing of the house. While an interior or exterior decorator can be hired to take care of this, most people prefer to handle it themselves, and choose the furniture and decorations they like the most. Even though this takes a little longer than hiring an interior decorator and letting him or her do all the work, it is a process that allows the home owners to become more familiar with their new home, as they decide on each new piece of furniture and decoration. However, choosing between solid wood furniture and other types of furniture, plus deciding on what coffee tables to purchase or whether to purchase a nest of tables is something that is not as easy as it sounds.

In fact, sometimes it can take longer for a home owner to furnish his or her house, than it does to find the house and purchase it. If you are in such a situation and you have just bought a new home that you are looking to furnish then you should keep several things in mind. First of all, as previously mentioned, keep in mind that this is not a short process, so either take some time off work or make sure you have plenty of time after work to go searching for furniture or to browse furniture sites. This also depends on the size of your house and on the number of rooms it has, because each new room that you are planning to furnish will take anywhere from several hours to several days of your time.

Second, always remember your budget and try not to go over it. Once you start searching for furniture you will notice how easy it is to get lost in that process, and you will start forgetting that there are some things that you just cannot afford at the time, or at least now if you want to furnish the entire home. To avoid making mistakes that might leave you with a bedroom with no furniture, be sure to stick to your budget. It is also a good idea to set a budget for each room of the house, as that way you will make sure that all rooms will be furnished. Naturally, set the budget according to the importance of each room, but just make sure that all rooms are furnished and decorated just the way you like it.

Lastly, pick furniture that will last, not cheap furniture that will only last until the next paycheck arrives. It may be a cheap solution, and it may be easier for you to manage your budget when choosing cheap furniture, but just remember that you will have to replace it so many times that in the end you will regret the choice you have made. Try to pick solid wood furniture, preferably made out of oak, because that is the type of furniture that you will be leaving as inheritance for your children and grandchildren. The price may be higher that you would expect, and you may have to make compromises in other areas, such as exterior decoration, but the sacrifice will be worth it, and you can always add decorations later, but you cannot sleep on the floor for very long.

If you have decided on the type of furniture you want, but it is still too expensive for you, then be sure to search for it online as well, because there are literally thousands of furniture stores and chances are high that you will either find it at a lower price than you did locally, or that you will find something even nicer and cheaper on one of those sites. This is especially important when looking for solid wood furniture because its price tends to be higher than that of other types of furniture. Also, if you are going to order something online, be sure to check the shipping policies and costs, because sometimes if you purchase something over a certain value the shipping may be free. So if you are looking to purchase a solid wood bed keep in mind that you may end up paying less for it if you add one of those nice or a coffee tablesnest of tables to the order.

Consumer confidence up in February

(AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? A private research group says that consumer confidence in February rose dramatically from last month to the highest level since a year ago when the U.S. economy's outlook started to look brighter before souring again.

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 70.8, up from a revised 61.5 in January, helped by consumers' improving assessment of the job market. Analysts had expected a reading of 63. The February reading marks the highest level since February 2011 when it was 72.0.

The index, which is closely watched because consumer confidence makes up the majority of U.S. economic activity, is still far below the 90 that indicates a healthy economy. But it's closer to levels that indicate a steady economy than not. The index has risen slowly since hitting an all-time low of 25.3 in February of 2009. And in the past 12 months, it's jumped from the high 60s to the low 40s amid continued worries about the health of the U.S. economy.

"Consumers are considerably less pessimistic about current business and labor market conditions that they were in January," said Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center in a statement. "Despite further increases in gas prices, they are more optimistic about the short-term outlook for the economy, job prospects and their financial situation."

One gauge of the Consumer Confidence Index, which measures how shoppers feel now about the economy, rose to 45.0 from 38.8. The other gauge, which measures shoppers' assessment over the next six months, jumped to 88.0 from 76.7 in January.

According to the survey of consumers, conducted from Feb. 1 through Feb. 15, shoppers are optimistic about the job market. Those anticipating more jobs in the months ahead increased to 18.7 percent from 16.4 percent, while those anticipating fewer jobs declined to 16.9 percent from 19.1 percent.

There are reasons for optimism. The government says 243,000 jobs were added in January, pushing down the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years. Unemployment has fallen five months in a row for the first time since 1994. Job figures for February are due out next week.

Even the housing market, though still weak, is showing signs of recovery. Home values remain depressed, according to the latest snapshot from a widely followed Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index. But more people signed contracts to buy homes in January than in nearly two years, according to seasonally adjusted figures from The National Association of Realtors.

But there also are reasons for caution. The European debt crisis threatens to hurt the U.S. economy. And rising gas prices could limit spending by middle- and lower-income shoppers. The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline rose 18 cents to $3.69 from two weeks earlier, according to the Lundberg Survey of fuel prices released Sunday.

West Virginia hires former Pitt coach Patterson

West Virginia moved a step closer to completing its football staff by hiring former Pitt defensive coordinator Keith Patterson as an assistant coach Wednesday.

Patterson also coached the linebackers and was interim head coach at Pitt last season after Todd Graham resigned in December. Patterson had accepted a job at Arkansas State last month but resigned last week.

He will coach defense at West Virginia, although his specific role was not disclosed Wednesday.

Patterson spent eight years at Tulsa with Graham before joining him at Pitt and was a high school coach in Oklahoma and Texas for 16 years before that.

Head coach Dana Holgorsen will announce the titles and roles of his defensive staff March 5 at the team's spring football luncheon.

"Keith has had a lot of successful years coaching at some great programs, both at the college and high school levels," Holgorsen said in a statement released by the university. "His years of experience in developing players and defenses will be an invaluable resource to our program, while his background in Texas and Oklahoma will only add to our recruiting efforts."

Patterson used a 3-4 defense at Pitt that was ranked No. 3 nationally in sacks in 2011 with 3.31 per game and was tied for No. 12 in tackles for loss with 98.

"Working at a place like West Virginia University with all of its history and tradition is a great opportunity for me," Patterson said in the release. "Coming off a conference championship and the Orange Bowl win, it's an exciting time here, and now we have an even greater opportunity as we head into our first year in the Big 12 Conference."

Pitt's defense also was No. 14 in third-down efficiency (32.98), No. 21 in rushing defense (116.9), No. 35 in total defense (350.62) and No. 38 in scoring defense (22.4).

Five Pitt players were named to the Big East All-Conference first- and second-team defenses.

(AP) ? Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned against the dangers of foreign influence on Thursday at a campaign rally attended by tens of thousands of people, many of them state workers who were pressured to take part as a show of support for a leader facing his first outburst of public discontent.

Putin is running for a third term as president in a March 4 election and is almost certain to win. During 12 years in power, he has sidelined his political opponents and built up his image as the defender of a strong and prosperous Russia. His approval ratings are still running at well above 50 percent despite the largest opposition protests the country has seen since the 1991 Soviet collapse.

Putin has tried to discredit the protesters by accusing their leaders of being paid agents of the United States working to weaken Russia. His references on Thursday were more subtle as he called on all Russians who "cherish, care about and believe in" their motherland to unite.

"We ask everyone not to look abroad, not to run to the other side and not to betray your motherland, but to join us," he said from a makeshift stage in a soccer stadium as a light snow fell on his bare head.

But he also warned the West: "We won't allow anyone to meddle in our affairs or impose their will upon us, because we have a will of our own."

The pro-Putin rally was held on Defenders of the Fatherland, a national holiday that replaced the Soviet-era Red Army Day. As participants marched in columns toward the stadium along the Moscow River, they carried Russian flags and wore armbands in the national colors. Patriotic songs from decades past blared from vans parked along the route.

They carried signs saying "As long as we have Putin we have a strong country," ''Vote for Putin, vote for a stable country," and "There is no alternative."

Putin won his two previous presidential terms in 2000 and 2004. After moving into the prime minister's job, he remained Russia's No. 1 leader but has seen his support slip amid growing public frustration with his rigid controls over the political scene and rampant corruption.

The campaign rally came in response to the opposition protests, which began in December after a parliamentary election that Putin's party won through what appeared to be widespread fraud. The Kremlin has entered into what has become a competition over crowd size, eager to show that it, too, can bring tens of thousands of people out onto the street.

But while the protests have been embraced by Russia's middle class and young urban professionals, many of those who attended Thursday's rally showed little enthusiasm. They included workers paid by or dependent on the state, including teachers, municipal workers and employees of state companies. Some said they had been promised two days off in return for attending.

Many people at the rally were reluctant to explain why they had come or offered only perfunctory statements in support of Putin. Some were brought by bus or train from other cities around Russia. Thousands bolted for a nearby subway station at the end of the march rather than enter the Luzhniki stadium to hear Putin.

An estimated 75,000 people filled the stadium, which had room for about 100,000 in the stands and on the pitch.

Some march participants offered genuine praise.

"I love Putin and Putin loves me," said Vladimir Gryzlov, a 68-year-old musician who brought his accordion.

With him was 70-year-old Tatyana Goytseva, who like many older Russians said she feared a return to the political turmoil of the 1990s and felt secure under Putin's leadership.

"We are happy with it, but of course the young people don't think the same," said Goytseva, a social worker who helps the elderly. She said her three grandchildren were not voting for Putin.

Putin has four challengers, including three veteran party leaders who long ago reached an accommodation with the Kremlin and pose little challenge to Putin. The only newcomer is Mikhail Prokhorov, a 46-year-old billionaire businessman who owns the New Jersey Nets basketball team.

Prokhorov's candidacy has been viewed as a Kremlin-approved effort to add legitimacy to the election and channel the discontent of the protesters. Grigory Yavlinsky, the veteran leader of the liberal opposition party Yabloko, was denied the right to run.

The Communist and nationalist candidates held separate rallies in Moscow on Thursday, each drawing 2,500 to 3,500 supporters.

Putin and his supporters have tried to add an element of fear to the political situation by depicting the protesters as revolutionaries intent on overthrowing the government, even though the opposition leaders have consistently called for peaceful, democratic change.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin picked up the theme on Thursday.

"Ambitious politicians are calling for a revolution," he told the crowd ahead of Putin's arrival. "We won't allow any upheaval in the country."

A blue-collar worker who traveled nearly 1,400 kilometers (900 miles) to speak at the rally also disparaged the protesters.

"This is our country. It does not belong to those loafers who are always grumbling," said Igor Kholmanskikh, who works at a plant producing tanks and train cars in Nizhny Tagil.

Perhaps in honor of the patriotic holiday, Putin framed the campaign as a battle for the future of Russia.

"The battle for Russia goes on! Victory will be ours!" he said in wrapping up his six-minute speech.

Eugenics, American Style

Unlike many other genetic anomalies, such as Tay-Sachs and anencephaly, Down Syndrome (also known as Down's Syndrome or Trisomy 21) is not a terminal disorder. Children born with Down Syndrome are not vegetables, nor are their lives demonstrably not worth living. Indeed, advances in science and changes in public perception have combined to make Down Syndrome a relatively mild birth defect: The average child born with Down Syndrome in America today can expect to reside at home, go to school, learn to read, hold a job, and live to the age of 55. He will grow up cognizant of ethics and events, and will be mildly to moderately retarded, with an IQ of between 55 and 70. It is one of the triumphs of modern society that the life of the average person with Down Syndrome has become strikingly normal. Except that, unlike normal people, people with Down Syndrome have been targeted for elimination.

New study shows minority toddlers with autism are more delayed than affected Caucasian peers

Increased awareness among clinicians and parents could lead to earlier diagnosis and intervention for minority children with ASD

BALTIMORE, Md. The first prospective study of ethnic differences in the symptoms of autism in toddlers shows that children from a minority background have more delayed language, communication and gross motor skills than Caucasian children with the disorder. Researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute concluded that subtle developmental delays may be going unaddressed in minority toddlers until more severe symptoms develop.

While the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) does not differ across racial and ethnic groups, some studies have shown that children of African American, Hispanic and Asian descent are less likely to receive an early diagnosis of autism than Caucasian children. In this new study, Dr. Rebecca Landa, director of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at Kennedy Krieger Institute, investigated whether the symptoms of autism in toddlers play a role in this disparity in diagnosis as part of her work to improve access, education and outreach to minority communities.

"We found the toddlers in the minority group were significantly further behind than the non-minority group in development of language and motor skills and showed more severe autism symptoms in their communication abilities," says Landa, whose study included children and parents of African American, Asian and Hispanic descent. "It's really troubling when we look at these data alongside diagnosis statistics because they suggest that children in need of early detection and intervention are not getting it." (To read an online discussion with Dr. Landa about this work, visit http://www.kennedykrieger.org/landa-discussion-022112.)

The study, published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (Epub ahead of print), examined development in 84 toddlers with ASD at an average 26-28 months of age using three standardized instruments that evaluate child development. Children were evaluated by their caregivers using the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales Developmental Caregiver Questionnaire (CSBS-DP CQ) and by research clinicians using the Mullen Scales of Early Learning and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic (ADOS). After controlling for participants' socioeconomic status, all three tools indicated a significant difference between minority and non-minority children.

Previous studies published by Dr. Landa and her colleagues at Kennedy Krieger show that detection of ASD is possible at as early as 14 months of age. While early diagnosis is crucial for accessing intervention services, studies examining children from minority groups suggest considerable delays in the diagnosis of ASD in these children relative to their Caucasian peers.

Dr. Landa points to cultural differences in what communities perceive as typical and atypical development in young children, the relationships between families and respected community physicians, and the stigma that some cultures place on disability as areas where education and awareness could have meaningful impact.

"Addressing cultural influences gives us a clear target to improve service delivery to minority children, but these findings may also suggest biological and other culturally-related differences between Caucasian and minority children with autism," says Landa. "There are other complex diseases that present differently in different ethnic groups and more research is needed to investigate this possibility."

The findings of this research prompted Dr. Landa and her team to begin a study that will document the age at which minority parents first noticed signs of developmental disruption in their children, the specific nature of the behavior that concerned them, and the children's intervention history. Additional research is also needed to study group-specific differences in the presentation of autism symptoms between a variety of minority groups.

"Although questions remain on why these differences exist, by taking steps to develop more culturally-sensitive screening and assessment practices, with a special focus on educating parents, clinicians and health educators, I believe we can empower parents to identify early warning signs and ensure minority children have the same access to services as their Caucasian peers," says Landa.
