BT unites Openzone and Fon as a single WiFi hotspot service in the UK

BT unites Openzone and Fon as a single WiFi hotspot service for the UKJust when you were finally beginning to understand the difference between Openzone and Fon, British operator BT has decided to merge them into a single hotspot service called BT Wi-fi -- creating what it claims is the "world's largest wi-fi community." Access already comes free and unlimited with home and business broadband connections, so there's "no need to pay for 3G or a dongle" so long as you're in a relatively densely populated area. The re-branding should have little impact on how you use the service, except that the old network names will gradually be replaced, but then a bit of unification often has unexpected benefits.

Find Reliable Websites to get to know International Current News

To collect the news is very important now. We cannot live without getting update of the current news. The world is so little to us that the countries opposite to our globe are near to us like the neighboring families. So, we are so conscious about getting the news of all countries. We do not feel easy if we do not get the news of the other countries. Here media play an important role for delivering the new worldwide. In the previous days, we do not get news of the other world so easily. We do not get the news of own country also. All the impossible has been made possible by the grace of current media. That is the reason; to get international current news is not so hard to us.

The news might be anything about games and sports, political, economical, social, and cultural or any kind of disaster, the news of weather forecast etc.

We are now able to get the current news internationally as well as the news of our locale sitting in the arm chair in the house. The work has done made easy by the help of current electronic media such as TV, radio, internet websites, mobile phones, news papers etc. We are now able to get international current news as soon as the journalist reached the place of the event. The thing has gone a step ahead by the help of satellite camera. We can get the image of the event of the place where no man can reach just like a huge ignition, large fighting, hidden places of antisocial in a jungle etc. So, the current media is helping us a lot.

Newspaper also is a most popular and important media of getting international current news. But one problem is that it delivers the news of the previous day.

Otherwise, all over the world, news paper is a must media to all. Radio is also a great medium of getting the current news worldwide. Internet website also has been playing an important role in delivering the current news of the world. Now the world is so small to us that now any country in the world can continue the monopoly over the world. All kinds of news have been delivered by all media. So, to collect international current news is so easy today. Be connected with any of the medium you will get all current news happening worldwide.

Kids who cook are hungrier for healthy food choices

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? Getting kids to pass up junk food in favour of healthier fruits and veggies has led to many a mealtime meltdown for parents everywhere. Now, researchers from the University of Alberta offer a simple solution: give them an apron.

A province-wide survey of Grade 5 students in Alberta suggests the best way to get your child to eat healthier foods -- and actually enjoy them -- is to have them help with meal preparation.

"Kids who like fruits and vegetables more tend to eat them more frequently and have better diets," said lead author Yen Li Chu, a post-doctoral fellow in the School of Public Health. "These data show that encouraging kids to get involved in meal preparation could be an effective health promotion strategy for schools and parents."

Published last month by Public Health Nutrition in an early online release, the study involved a survey of students in 151 schools across Alberta to learn about kids' experiences with cooking and food choices.

Nearly one-third of children reported helping with meal prep at least once a day; another one-third said they helped one to three times a week. A quarter of children helped once a month, and 12.4 per cent avoided the kitchen completely.

In general, children preferred fruits to veggies, but children who helped with cooking showed a greater preference for both. Vegetable preference was also 10 per cent higher among children who helped cook.

The data also showed that kids who did meal prep and cooking were more confident about the importance of making healthier food choices.

Paul Veugelers, co-author and Canada Research Chair in Population Health at the U of A, said getting children to eat healthier food promotes bone and muscle development, learning and self-esteem.

"Good food is important for us. It keeps weight gain away -- and more important than that, it keeps chronic disease away," Veugelers said. "The overarching objective of our work is to lower the burden of chronic disease in our society. A healthy diet is right at the top."

Chu said the results underscore the value of getting kids interested in mealtime activities in the home, but added there could be room for schools to get involved, too.

"You can go into schools and have cooking classes and cooking clubs to help them boost their fruit and vegetable intake and make healthier choices," she said.

Though this survey dealt with Grade 5 students, the lessons are equally applicable to older youth, including post-secondary students, added Veugelers.

"For many of them, it may be the first time they leave home, the first time in their lives they're responsible for their own diets," he said. "There are lessons here for them too, to form groups and take turns cooking, and pay attention to good meal preparation."

This work was part of the Real Kids Alberta evaluation funded by Alberta Health. Real Kids Alberta is a collaborative initiative between the School of Public Health and Alberta Health to provide directions to improve eating habits and activity levels in Alberta children and youth.

Home prices rise in nearly all major US cities

(AP) ? Home prices rose in nearly all major U.S. cities in April from March, further evidence of a housing market that is slowly improving even while the job market slumps.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index released Tuesday showed increases in 19 of the 20 cities tracked. That's the second straight month that prices have risen in a majority of U.S. cities.

And a measure of national prices rose 1.3 percent in April from March, the first increase in seven months.

San Francisco, Washington and Phoenix posted the biggest increases in April. Prices fell 3.6 percent in Detroit, the only city to record a drop.

The month-to-month prices aren't adjusted for seasonal factors. Still, prices in half of the cities are up over the past 12 months.

Prices are increasing as the housing market has slowly started to recover. Sales of new and previously occupied homes are up over the past year, in part because mortgage rates have plunged to the lowest levels on record. Builders are more confident and are starting to build more homes.

Consistent prices increases benefit the broader economy. Homeowners feel wealthier, encouraging them to spend more. Rising prices also encourage more Americans to buy homes because they are more confident that their investment will appreciate over time.

"If you are no longer quite so afraid that prices are going to fall, you are more likely to buy," said Pierre Ellis, a senior economist at Decision Economics.

The S&P/Case-Shiller monthly index covers roughly half of U.S. homes. It measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The April figures are the latest available.

Even with the gains, the index is 34 percent below its peak reached in the summer of 2006, at the height of the housing boom. Based on the 20-city index, home prices are now at about the same level as in early 2003.

And prices continue to fall in some hard-hit areas. Prices in Atlanta have plunged 17 percent over the past 12 months, the biggest year-over-year drop.

The largest gain was in Phoenix, where prices rose 8.6 percent in that stretch.

The weaker markets continue to weigh on national prices. A measure of prices for all 20 cities fell 1.9 percent over the 12 months that ended in April.

Still, other measures show home prices have risen nationally during that period. CoreLogic, a private firm, calculates that prices rose 1.1 percent nationally in those 12 months. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, says prices have increased 3 percent in that time.

Recent data indicate that the housing market has started to recover more than five years after the bubble burst.

Greater interest from buyers is boosting builder confidence. In May, builders requested the highest number of permits to build homes and apartments in three and a half years.

The supply of homes for sale remains extremely low, which has helped stabilize prices. The inventory of previously occupied homes is back down to levels last seen in 2006. And there were 145,000 new homes for sale in May. That's only slightly higher than in April, which was the lowest supply on records dating back to 1963.

Despite the modest gains in housing, the broader economy has weakened in recent months. Employers have added an average of only 73,000 jobs a month in April and May. That's much lower than the average of 226,000 added in the first three months of this year. Some economists worry that the sluggish job market could weigh on home sales just as the housing market is flashing signs of recovery.

A review of more than 1,154 blood samples taken from wild California?condors?and tested from 1997 to 2010 found that 48 percent of the birds had?lead?levels so high, they could have died without treatment.

So far, a ban on?lead?bullets in the birds? habitat appears to have had little effect, the study found.

?Lead?poisoning is preventing the recovery of California?condors,? said Myra Finkelstein, a research toxicologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was a?lead?author of the study. ?The population is not self-sustaining.?

Condors?? the birds with the largest wingspan in North America ? are scavengers. They eat dead deer, pigs and other animals, often that hunters have shot. They ingest bullet fragments and are poisoned.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law in 2007 to ban hunting with?lead?bullets, slugs or buckshot in the?condors? range, which extends from Los Angeles to San Jose, where the birds have been seen atop Mount Hamilton. But it hasn?t worked. Birds analyzed before the law took effect had blood levels the same as birds analyzed afterward.

The reason, said Finkelstein, is that a?condor?eat 75 to 150 dead animals a year.

?If just one has a?lead?bullet fragment, that can be enough to kill the bird,? she said.

Condors?once ranged from British Columbia to Mexico. But because of habitat loss, hunting and?lead?poisoning, the population dwindled to just 22 nationwide by 1982.

Federal biologists captured all remaining wild?condors?in 1987 and began breeding them in zoos. The birds? offspring have been gradually released back to the wild.

Today the California?condor?population has grown to 386. Of those, 213 live in the wild at Big Sur, Pinnacles National Monument in San Benito County, Southern California, Arizona, Utah and Mexico. The other 173condors?live in captivity, at places such as the Los Angeles Zoo.

Although the population growth has been impressive, it is deceptive because it is highly dependent upon human intervention, the researchers said in Monday?s study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Every free-flying?condor?has a radio or GPS collar to track it. Nearly all of them are captured twice a year and tested for?lead. A few chicks have been born in the wild, but biologists still put out out food, such as stillborn calves, for the birds to eat so their population can have a chance to grow.

Monday?s study, which also looked at?lead?levels in?condor?feathers, confirmed that?lead?in the birds is coming from bullets, rather than other sources such as old paint chips, by matching isotope levels of?lead?in bullets tolead?in the?condors.

Researchers were surprised, Finkelstein said, by the extensive poisoning.

For example, 30 percent of all?condors?captured every year have?lead?levels that, while not potentially fatal, can block reproduction and cause immune system problems.

And 20 percent of the birds captured every year have levels that could kill them if not treated with chelation, a process where?condors?are fed calcium-based drugs that bind to the?lead?and help them pass it naturally. But the process also strips nutrients, and can cause the birds to be hospitalized a month or more.

In California, the state Department of Fish and Game and some hunting and environmental groups have worked to promote the?lead?ban in?condor?habitat. Some surveys show high compliance rates. But there is little enforcement, and ranchers or hunters can still use?lead?bullets and shot, which are cheaper and more readily available than other types of ammunition, such as copper, with little risk of getting caught.

Tthe Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group based in Tucson, Ariz., and six other conservation groups sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this month to force the agency to institute controls or bans on?lead?ammunition.

?We?ve removed toxic?lead?from gasoline, paint and most products exposing humans to?lead?poisoning, now it?s time to do the same for hunting ammunition to protect America?s wildlife,? said Jeff Miller, a spokesman for the Center for Biological Diversity.

Native Firefox Android browser adds speed, Flash, HTML5 and a fresh look (hands-on)

DNP Native Firefox Android browser adds speed, fresh look, Flash, HTML5 and, er, speed

After a brief stretch in beta followed by some vague teasing, Firefox's native Android app update is finally set to hit Google Play. While there are a raft of bells and whistles -- a new welcome page, curvy Australis tabs, Flash and HTML5 support, for starters -- it's the browser's newfound speed that is getting the MVP treatment. That rapidity is as good a place as any to start a quick hands-on, especially since the native browser lag on one of our older handsets, a Galaxy S, often makes us want to hurl it through a pane of glass. Mozilla claims it built Firefox to a new benchmark it developed called Eideticker, resulting in an overall browser experience twice as fast as the stock Android one. As advertised, initial loading is quasi-instant, and navigation, zooming and tab switching seemed smooth as well, even on the two-gen-old phone.

Feature-wise, preferences and other desktop settings imported easily with Firefox Sync's shared password system, and the unfortunately named "Awesome Screen" is the new home page shown above, from which it's fairly simple to launch your preferred sites. Flash and HTML5 generally displayed correctly despite a few minor rendering bugs, and the curved tabs and other design touches make it one of the more elegant Android browsers we've played with. Unfortunately, many sites display in full because they don't yet detect Firefox as a mobile app, but the installation of the Phony 3.2 add-in lets it impersonate other smartphone browsers, and it seemed to work well. We also didn't like that tabbed browsing now requires two taps to get to another page, unlike the previous version, but we imagine that was needed for the increased speed. Overall, Firefox is a welcome addition to the Android ecosystem -- we bet you're just as eager to start browsing as we are, so stay tuned for the app to hit Google Play later today, or jump past the break for a quick speed demo from the kind folks at Mozilla.

Update: The new version is now available at the source link below.

Toxins produced by algae lead to deviant behaviour and changes in brain activity in salmon

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Salmon exposed to algal-produced neurotoxins show changes in both their brain activity and general behaviour. It has also been found that very small doses of these toxins can have an affect on how salmon relate to other fish. These toxins are some of those that can cause food poisoning in people who eat contaminated mussels.

Marit Bakke has studied three different neurotoxins: saxitoxin, brevetoxin and domoic acid and the effects that relatively low doses of these contaminants have on salmon. She has described some characteristic features of salmon's general behaviour and how it changes under the influence of these toxins, such as loss of balance and equilibrium and swimming aimlessly. In addition, she examined the glucose metabolism in the brain by means of radioactively treated glucose as a marker. The degree of marker accumulation corresponded to the neuroactivity in the areas of the brain being studied, and in this way, Bakke demonstrated that different parts of the brain undergo changes when influenced by these toxins.

Saxitoxin and domoic acid were administered in such low doses that it was not possible to detect changes in swimming patterns. Nevertheless, Bakke was able to prove that the toxins had an effect on how the fish related to new fish that were released into the aquarium. This would indicate that fish exposed to even small concentrations of algal toxins may therefore tackle new situations in a different way to fish which have never been exposed to such toxins.

Marine algal toxins are often the cause of food poisoning in humans who have eaten shellfish. But such toxins also affect animals living in the sea, either via direct absorption from the water or because the food they eat is contaminated. In the case of farmed fish, the consequences can be serious because they cannot escape from areas contaminated with algae and algal toxins. It is often difficult to detect cases where fish are exposed to very low doses of algal toxins or their potential consequences. Bakke's doctoral research demonstrates several possible ways of detecting algal toxins, even in low concentrations.

Bakke carried out her doctoral project at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science and at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research's research station by the Oslo Fjord at Solbergstrand near Dr?bak.

Scientists struggle with mathematical details, study by biologists finds

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Many people remember struggling with maths at school, but few of us would expect that professional scientists suffer from a similar problem in their daily work. A new study by biologists at the University of Bristol shows that scientists tend to overlook their colleagues' research if it is packed full of mathematical equations.

Scientists would like to believe that the popularity of new theories depends entirely on their scientific value, in terms of novelty, importance and technical correctness. But the Bristol study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, shows that scientists pay less attention to theories that are crammed with mathematical details.

Dr Tim Fawcett and Dr Andrew Higginson, researchers in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences, found that scientific articles presenting many equations on each page are seldom referred to by other scientists. The most maths-heavy articles are referenced 50 per cent less often than those with little or no maths.

Many scientists, including the celebrated theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, have worried about how mathematics will affect the impact of their work, but the Bristol study is the first to measure the extent of the problem.

Dr Fawcett said: "This is an important issue because nearly all areas of science rely on close links between mathematical theory and experimental work. If new theories are presented in a way that is off-putting to other scientists, then no one will perform the crucial experiments needed to test those theories. This presents a barrier to scientific progress."

So is there any way to overcome the communication barrier between theory and experiments? One long-term remedy would be to improve the mathematical training of science graduates.

But there could be more immediate solutions, as Dr Higginson explained: "Scientists need to think more carefully about how they present the mathematical details of their work. The ideal solution is not to hide the maths away, but to add more explanatory text to take the reader carefully through the assumptions and implications of the theory."

But the authors of the study fear that this approach will be resisted by some scientific journals, for which page space is at a premium.

"The top journals want articles to be extremely concise, with many of the technical details going in an online appendix," said Dr Fawcett. "Fortunately, our study suggests that equations in an appendix have no effect on citation rates. So moving some of the equations to an appendix may be the most pragmatic solution."

Artists & Celebries & Entertainment: Re: Mind's Eye What is going on?

Mine was "for fun", as well- esp. for keeping up with the trends-

mostly formal evening wear. Maybe maternity clothes were necessary
because rack items were so ugly. It can be a creative hobby- some
often thought I was plugging a new line...nope! And it's more fun than
cross-stitch or needlepoint, etc. though I went through a knitting
phase up to designers like Calvin Klein. Anyway, I think many of these
home arts are a way of expressing math, engineering and chemistry.
Besides Gustav Klimt was quite faithful to his sweetheart-seamstress-
I even did a take-off portrait after his version of Emilie Floge.

What situation? I hope you are not ill or your knee is not giving you
trouble.

Why Choose Professionally-Installed Patio Covers

A patio has always been considered a great addition to Houston homes because it can be used all year long.? Even during the winter, it still provides additional living space since Houston winters are usually mild and snowfalls are really rare.? Moreover, there are so many kinds of patio covers that can cater to the specific needs of different Houston homeowners.

There are many local contractors that install the kind of patio cover Houston homeowners look for.? On the other hand, there are also DIY patio cover kits available nowadays that can be installed by the homeowners themselves.? However, many homeowners opt to have their patio covers professionally installed for the following reasons:

Customization

Sure, the DIY patio cover kits come in many designs, materials, sizes, and colors that can match most house styles.? However, these may not be perfectly suitable for the patios in many Houston homes.? After all, the patio varies in each home, as do the needs and preferences of a homeowner.?? It would be difficult to find a DIY kit that would sufficiently cover a custom-made patio and that would blend seamlessly with the adjacent house structures at the same time.

Meanwhile, a professionally-installed patio cover takes a patio?s size and the homeowners? needs into consideration.? A contractor usually inspects the area before giving the homeowner the free benefit of expert recommendations.

Installation

The quality of the installation of a patio cover differs when it is done by a professional.? If an inexperienced individual does the installation, there is the risk that it will not be installed properly or safely.? More often than not, this leads to problems in the future and renders the poorly-installed patio cover more vulnerable to damage.? A patio cover that has been installed by an experienced professional is more durable and secure.? All Tex also provides warranties you can?t get from a DIY kit.

Have a professional assess and cater to your patio cover needs.? To get a free quote or arrange for our free onsite inspection and recommendations, you can call (888) 669-1806 or fill out our request form.

Demi Lovato And One Direction's Niall Horan Are 'Just Friends'

Lovato shuts down rumors that she and Horan are dating in a recent radio interview.
By Jocelyn Vena

Demi Lovato

So, are they or aren't they? Well, according to Demi Lovato herself, she and One Direction's Niall Horan aren't dating.

While he called her a "cool girl" in a recent interview and there's even been suggestion that they've Skyped with eachother — the mark of any true romance — the singer herself, in a new radio interview, says he's nothing more than a pal.

"I don't even know who One Direction is ... it's so crazy. I'm kidding," she told B104 Radio. "No, Niall's a friend of mine. I do know who he is and everyone knows who One Direction is."

While they are just friends, she does note that his "cool" feelings for her are reciprocated. "But, yeah, we're just friends," she said. "And he's awesome."

Regardless of where Demi and Niall stand in the romance department, Niall's bandmates hinted he might want to be more than friends in a recent appearance on the Canadian entertainment news show "etalk." In a game called "Rapid Fire Romance," a photo of a female celebrity would show up, and the guys had to pick which of their bandmates would be the best match. When Demi's photo came up in the pile, Horan's bandmate, Louis Tomlinson, joked, "Niall. 100 percent."

From there, Harry Styles, had a bit more fun at Horan's expense, further joking, "Niall dreams dirty things!"

Since the guy's dropped their chart-topping debut, Up All Night, there have been a number of romance rumors about them floating around. Most notably, Harry Styles had been famously linked to Taylor Swift for some time. When MTV News chatted with the guys earlier this year about all the love they have been receiving from the pop world's biggest princesses, they admitted they didn't mind all the attention. "[It's] really exciting, I suppose," Liam Payne said back in April shortly after they performed at the Kids' Choice Awards. "And even following Katy Perry on the stage as well was a big thing for us. It's just amazing to be in the same room as these sort of people, for us to just come over from England and just be involved."

Zynga.com to show Facebook ads

(AP) ? Zynga is starting to show ads from Facebook on Zynga.com, its stand-alone website that lets people play its online games away from Facebook.

Since players use their Facebook accounts to log in to Zynga.com, the ads will be targeted to them based the information that they already share on Facebook.

Facebook says advertisers won't have any new criteria to target people. So logging in to Zynga.com would probably get users the same ads they already see on Facebook.

The move is likely the first step in the creation of an advertising network for Facebook that allows it to show ads on websites beyond Facebook.com. This is something other companies, such as Amazon.com Inc.'s Zappos.com, already do.

The companies are not disclosing financial details of the deal.

50-gigapixel camera is straight out of science fiction

29 min.

While photographers marvel at the 20 or 30 megapixels captured by the latest cameras, researchers at Duke laugh quietly and return to their lab to continue work on a system that could capture 50 gigapixels at the touch of a button.

For comparison, if your average point-and-shoot picture was the size of a word on this page, a 50-gigapixel shot would be around the size of your entire screen.

Gigapixels aren't new in and of themselves, of course: Enormous photos of the Milky Way or Obama's?inauguration are both effective demonstrations of the power of huge images. But generally these giant pictures are created by one camera that takes hundreds (or thousands) of shots, which are then?fitted together after the fact. Not a problem if you're taking pictures of stars, but no good?if you wanted to capture a flock of birds taking off.

The team at Duke, led by David Brady at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, decided to take things a different direction: instead of taking lots of pictures in sequence with one camera, why not take lots of pictures at once with a bunch of cameras?

The result is the AWARE-2 camera system, a machine that looks like something out of science fiction. It bristles with wires and ports, and houses?a lens array that could be the eye of an enormous robotic insect.

The system actually shares many characteristics with insects' compound eyes: A single image enters through a central lens, but is then refracted outward in 98 different directions to 98 different image sensors, each of which receives a different piece of the picture. The pieces are then assembled by a central processor.

Images produced by the system are enormous. 50 gigapixels is the maximum theoretical size, but even a fraction of that?that is far larger than any picture most people have ever taken. Look at the shot below; on this enormous landscape, the tiny white dots on the sky are in fact birds, captured in enough detail that you can zoom in and check out the details of their wings. (here's a larger version)

That's with a prototype device using only half the microcameras and the first generation of lenses designed for the system.?Brady explains that right now, the size and quality of images is limited by the quality of the main objective lens, but they have already built a superior lens for 10-gigapixel images.

50 gigapixels is the upper limit because it is the precision?limit of lens-manufacturing technology, and also because beyond that you start running into the resolution limit of the atmosphere, i.e. what can be discerned through all those pesky air molecules between the camera and the subject. So it's no surprise that they're considering imaging at that size for astronomical rather than terrestrial photography.

The applications of enormous images captured more or less instantly are easy to imagine, both in everyday life, academic research, and for the military, which is funding the project through DARPA.
