ROCKWALL ? Hundreds of swimmers dived into Lake Ray Hubbard on Saturday for Swim Across America Dallas ? one of 14 open water swims across the country raising money for cancer research.

Both rookie swimmers and Olympians participated.

The top fundraising team was Team Laurn, a group swimming in memory of Laurn Schroeder, the sister of WFAA.com operations manager Doug Boehner. She was instrumental in promoting the first race last year, and even participated in the event before losing her own battle with cancer.

"All along the way it is a lot of work and time and effort, and it's worth every minute that you spend, absolutely," said Team Laurn member Marci Stancoff. "You see all these people come out, everybody is affected by it, so the more we can do, the better ? someone will benefit that you know and love."

The 250 swimmers raised more than $250,000 for the Baylor Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas.
