How does engagement on social media impact web traffic? | Joined ...

As a regular on the social networking scene I had a regular routine (does Social Media take too long?)and interacted with lots of brilliant people on social media. I?ve been missing lately and wrote about why, in?not engaging on twitter I?m sorry, this article is about the results.

When I dropped out I became one of those people that were purely automated -?yes I hate them too!

Purely automated?

I normally supplement my interaction, discussion and retweets with a couple of automation tools (Tweet old post, Twitter Feed). They send tweets out from my blog.

During my absence I stopped all but those feeds. I even created less blogs than normal. I?m glad to say I?m now returning to normal and hope you enjoy the engagement.

If one takes the view the social media is to boost income and step one of that is ?followers? with step two being web site traffic, it seemed natural to look for some results.

The results of social media abstinence

I am not a fan of ?how many followers?, as I think there are more important measures, but the growth in followers declined.

The website is, to me, more important. Our website isn?t aimed at producing direct sales from the page as most people want to engage with a business coach prior to getting them to help build their business (well that?s my theory).

But, getting people to the website is an important method of engagement. From it come sign ups to educational material and our free seminars.

  • But in terms of traffic alone, from a six week period of decreased engagement, these numbers were interesting.
  • Total web traffic fell, mainly due to social media
  • Social media was producing over a third of website traffic and in the last two months that has fallen to 12%
  • Twitter in particular has fallen from 25% down to 8
  • LinkedIn as a referral source has fallen from 15% to 3%
  • Interestingly it?s the only two months in which mobile traffic has fallen to the site as well.

The moral of the story

Social media drives web traffic when it is engaging, not simply pushing out automated messages.

Web traffic drives sign ups, sign ups drive sales.

LinkedIn seems to be even more sensitive that Twitter, probably because I use (used)?groups?a lot.

My actions

Get back,?apologise?for my absence and re-engage.

I?d love to hear your thoughts about good and bad social media use and its effectiveness, do comment.
